Public Restrooms

NYC DOT manages two programs that bring restrooms to public spaces around the city.

Modular Public Restrooms

NYC is piloting a program to bring free, accessible facilities to public plazas and high-traffic areas where New Yorkers currently lack reliable access to a bathroom.

Each restroom will be free and open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The ADA-accessible, fully touchless units include a comfortable interior, running-water sink, flushing toilet, climate control and baby changing station.

The pilot will run for one year, with installation starting in mid-September 2026.

How to Use

Unlock and access the restrooms by text message, QR code or through the Throne Bathroom Network app. The app also allows users to find the nearest restroom, check real-time cleanliness ratings and see whether a unit is available. Users without a phone can use a tap card distributed by a local community partner within walking distance of the restroom.

Cleaning

Throne Labs will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining each unit. Real-time feedback in the app will allow the company to respond quickly to issues and prioritize units that need attention.

Automatic Public Toilets

Automatic public toilets are single stall bathroom facilities that offer comfort, hygiene, accessibility, and security to the public, within a modern design. Automatic public toilets are ADA accessible.

Automatic public toilets are free to use and are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Currently engineered to self-sanitize after each use, these toilets are serviced twice a day for inspection and system maintenance, affording the people of New York a safe and valuable convenience.

NYC DOT’s coordinated street furniture franchise agreement with JCDecaux permits JCDecaux to install, operate, and maintain up to 40 automatic public toilets. NYC DOT works closely with local community boards, elected officials, and other stakeholders to solicit recommendations for new sites.
