Collection Services for NYC Residents

We provide FREE weekly curbside collection service to New York City residents. Every day, we collect 24 million pounds of trash, recyclables, and compostable material.

Collection Setout

Set out trash, recyclables, and composting at the curb by midnight before your collection day.

  • Trash - All properties with 1 to 9 residential units are required to use bins, 55 gallons or less, with secure lids for trash set out. Learn more about residential waste containerization.
  • Recycling - ALL NYC residents are required to recycle. Recyclables can be in bins or clear plastic bags. Bins with secure lids can be set out after 6:00 PM. Bags can be set out after 8:00 PM.
  • Composting - NYC residents are required to separate food and yard waste from trash. Composting must be set out in a labeled bin with a secure lid, 55 gallons or less. Extra leaf and yard waste can be put in a paper lawn and leaf bag or clear plastic bag.
  • Large Items - For items too big to fit inside bins or bags, set out the night before your trash or recycling day. Large items that aren't recyclable should be set out on your trash-only day, NOT your recycling day.
  • Items Requiring Special Handling and Disposal - Some items require special handling and disposal because they can be harmful or dangerous. Learn more about how to get rid of many harmful household items.

NOTE: If you do not separate or set out your waste correctly on the correct days/times, you may be fined.

Setout Times

  • Place waste out after 6:00 PM in a bin of 55 gallons or less with a secure lid, or
  • Place waste out after 8:00 PM, if putting bags directly on the curb

To ensure collection, ALL waste must be set out by midnight.

Bin Storage

Bins must be stored so sidewalks and other public walkways are kept clean and unobstructed.

You can store your bins inside your building or outside in spaces like alleyways and courtyards. If indoor and outdoor space is available, you may store bins within three feet of your building. Bin enclosures located on sidewalks are subject to NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

Multiunit residential buildings must follow NYC Building Codes for designated waste storage areas.

Missed Collection

You can report that your trash, recycling, or compost was not picked up starting at 8:00 AM the day after your collection day.

You CANNOT report missed collection if:

  • Collections were suspended on that day due to a DSNY holiday, winter snow operation, or another event
  • You did not set your waste out correctly
  • You set your waste out on the wrong day or at the wrong time.

To report missed collection, call 311 or submit a complaint online.

Holidays

We do not collect waste on most federal holidays. Learn more about holiday collection.

Snow and Severe Weather

Collections schedule may be delayed or suspended due to snowstorms or other severe weather. If collection was suspended due to a snow or weather event, missed collection complaints will not be accepted for that day.

Track the progress of DSNY snow removal vehicles with PlowNYC.

Requesting Collection Service

You can request DSNY trash and recycling collection for an address that has never had service or had previously been vacant.

Learn more and submit a request.

Private Carter Service

We collect from most residential buildings in NYC. There are some exceptions, including:

  • Buildings where owners have opted to use private carter service
  • Buildings still under development and without a certificate of occupancy
  • Buildings in areas that are undergoing zoning changes

NOTE: Even if your residential property has private carter collection, you are required to follow the NYC commercial trash, recycling, and composting rules.
