The IRS deadline to file a tax return for your 2025 taxes was April 15, 2026. NYC Free Tax Prep preparers provide assistance all year round. If you missed the deadline you can still use NYC Free Tax Prep to file your return or have questions answered.
If you didn't meet the April 15th tax filing deadline, you can apply for an extension to file from the IRS and the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance.
If you think you will owe taxes, it is a good idea to make an estimated payment.
If you don't owe taxes, you will not be penalized for filing late and do not need to file an extension. However, you may still be eligible for a tax refund. For example, if your income is below the 2025 requirement to file ($15,750 for single filers and $31,500 for joint filers) or if you typically get a refund and do not owe, you will not be penalized but may still receive money back.
The deadline to file an extension was April 15. An extension only applies to filing and not paying any taxes that are due. If you owe and your payment is received after the deadline, IRS and New York State penalties, fees, and interest may apply.
New Yorkers who earned $97,000 or less and file as an individual or married couple with qualifying children and/or dependents, or those who earned $68,000 or less and file as an individual or married couple without qualifying children and/or dependents, are eligible to file through NYC Free Tax Prep. If you work for yourself as a freelancer, gig worker, or small business owner, you need to file taxes annually and make estimated tax payments quarterly. Access free year-round resources.
