2008 Water Conservation Art and Poetry Contest
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is pleased to announce the winners of the 22nd annual Water Conservation Art & Poetry Contest. Over 350 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students from public, independent, and parochial schools throughout the City submitted original works of art and poetry relating to the NYC water supply system, water conservation, water quality, and wastewater treatment.
2008 NYC Tap Project Water Walk

In an effort to bring the global water crisis home to New Yorkers, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, U.S. Fund for UNICEF, New York City Deputy Mayor for Education and Community Development Dennis M. Walcott, the Mayor's Volunteer Center of New York City and Children for Children joined hip hop mogul and entrepreneur Russell Simmons and hundreds of young people and their families in the NYC Tap Project Water Walk on Saturday, March 15th at Riverside Park in Manhattan. The Tap Project Water Walk is an initiative where New Yorkers walk one mile carrying containers of water in a gesture of solidarity with those in the developing world who must collect and carry water on a daily basis.
New York City Watershed Environmental Education Resource Directory
The Watershed Environmental Education Alliance (WEEA) is an association of educators representing facilities, agencies and organizations based in and around the New York City water supply watersheds that develop, support and implement school-based and afterschool water education programs.
WEEA has just compiled the New York City Watershed Environmental Education Resource Directory.
The Directory is designed to be a comprehensive guide for teachers and other educators who are seeking to enhance their water-based curriculum with hands-on learning experiences about the New York City water supply system through watershed field trips and other special presentations.
Newtown Creek Nature Walk
Explore the first public waterfront access to Newtown Creek to learn about wastewater treatment, harbor water quality, and the history of New York City. Located in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, this quarter-mile nature walk offers stunning views of New York City and the local industrial landscape.
