Alternate Side Parking Suspensions

Alternate Side Parking (ASP) regulations allow for street cleaning. The City of New York suspends ASP rules on specific legal and religious holidays. The City also suspends ASP rules due to weather and emergencies. Check NYC 311 or Notify NYC for emergency suspension information.

This calendar posts the legal and religious holidays with ASP suspensions.

*Major Legal Holiday: On major legal holidays, you can park at a No Stopping, No Standing, or No Parking sign if the rule is not normally in effect seven days a week (for example, No Standing Anytime). Otherwise, you cannot. Parking meter regulations are also suspended on major legal holidays.

On all other holidays, only street cleaning rules are suspended. All other regulations remain in effect.

Emergency Suspensions

NYC may suspend ASP regulations because of inclement weather or emergencies. The decision is sometimes made late in the day since weather patterns can change fast.

NYC restores ASP regulations after a snowfall. This way plows can begin removing snow and ice from curbside lanes. Plowing helps clear parking lanes and catch basins, reducing the chance of flooding. It also helps return street cleaning operations back to normal.

Temporary Suspensions

NYC may suspend ASP regulations in parts of the city to post new regulations. This happens when the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) changes street cleaning rules. Suspending regulations for a short time allows NYC DOT to update signs. These suspensions do not affect parking rules other than ASP rules.

DSNY provides a weeklong grace period after new signage is posted. During this time crews will clean streets according to the new schedule. They will not issue summonses.

Enforcement of the new rules begin after the one-week grace period.
