Businesses

We conduct research and create policies that govern when, where, and how businesses separate and set out their waste. Although we do not provide businesses with collection services, they must comply with the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) rules and regulations.

All businesses in NYC must hire a private carter licensed with the Business Integrity Commission (BIC) for the collection of trade waste. DSNY does not provide collection services for businesses in most cases.

Important Dates

As of March 2024: ALL businesses are required to put their trash in containers.

July 31, 2024: Enforcement of restrictions on utensils, condiment packets, napkins, and containers for food service establishments begins.

September 3, 2024: Commercial Waste Zones rolls out in the first zone, Queens Central.

Resources

We provide educational materials and trainings to assist businesses in meeting recycling and organics requirements, preventing waste, and avoiding common violations.

Download and print free educational materials for your business in multiple languages. Materials include official notices, brochures, sample signs, labels, and guidebooks.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that any signs and labels you download or print accurately reflect your business' recycling/organics separation and collection program. We encourage businesses to create their own signs and labels for their specific needs.
