Businesses

If you are an establishment that produces commercial waste, you must have your waste collected by a private carter. Although DSNY does not collect commercial waste, we create policies governing when, where, and how NYC businesses separate and set out their waste, and we enforce those policies. Check the Commercial Waste Zones (CWZ) map and refer to the CWZ timeline to learn path applies:

  • If your zone has been implemented under the CWZ program: You must hire a private carter from the list assigned to your zone. Look up your address and assigned carters
  • If your zone has not yet been implemented under the CWZ program: You may hire any private carter licensed by the NYC Business Integrity Commission (BIC) for now. When your zone is implemented, you will need to switch to one of the CWZ-assigned carters.

Resources

We provide educational materials and trainings to assist businesses in meeting recycling and organics requirements, preventing waste, and avoiding common violations.

Download and print free educational materials for your business in multiple languages. Materials include official notices, brochures, sample signs, labels, and guidebooks.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that any signs and labels you download or print accurately reflect your business' recycling/organics separation and collection program. We encourage businesses to create their own signs and labels for their specific needs.
