DOWNTOWN
FLUSHING PEDESTRIAN PROJECT: TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
I (STREETSCAPE AND PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENTS IN
NEW YORK CITY)
Introduction
The
size, patterns of growth, and diversity of neighborhoods
in New York City have fostered a wide variety
of streetscapes. Certain streetscapes in New York
have been improved or enhanced to express the
distinct identity of the area or neighborhood
of which they are a part, creating a sense of
place that contributes to a feeling of community
for those who live there and making it a more
desirable location to visit.
A
cross section of areas in New York City similar
in density and character to Downtown Flushing
that have received streetscape improvements were
visited for this study. The improvements surveyed
were varied utilizing many different elements
and treatments to suit the requirements and needs
of a specific area. Many of these improvements
proved beneficial to the pedestrian environment,
increasing pedestrian safety and movement in the
area, as well as improving its appearance. This
memorandum will discuss the implementation and
maintenance of these streetscape improvements,
the various elements and treatments that can be
employed and the success of these improvements
with the intent to identify potential aids and
impediments to the realization of the Downtown
Flushing Pedestrian Project and, thus, increase
the likelihood of its success.
