Introduction

Based on the user inquiries over the past decade, the 1990 version of Socioeconomic Profiles - A Portrait of New York City has been expanded to six pages per Community District. These profiles are based on 1990 census sample count information and complement the full count information in Demographic Profiles - A Portrait of New York City. This 1990 Census edition has been further enhanced by the presentation of comparative 1980 Census data, where available. In addition, preceding the tables for each borough is a borough Community District map, and a series of maps showing neighborhoods within each Community District.

Readers should consult the technical appendix for a description of how the Community District data were complied. Caveats related to the exclusion of Joint Interest Areas and descriptions of major errors in the geographic allocation of census data are also in this part of the volume. Special notes are also included on specific subject items. Also in the Appendix, is the entire sample-count Bureau of the Census' 1990 Glossary, including definitions of census characteristics that are not covered in this volume. Users are strongly encouraged to consult the glossary particularly for subjects in which there were changes between 1980 and 1990 in definitions or tabulation detail.

The Appendix also includes a facsimile of the entire 1990 census questionnaire. Before analyzing the specific subject matter of current interest, it is recommended that the user read the question that generated the data as well as any related instructions to respondents printed on the questionnaire itself. Lastly, given that the profiles are based on sample count information, the Census Bureau's "Appendix C: Accuracy of the Data" has been included in the Appendix. Information on the sampling design, sampling error and estimation procedures is found in this section.
