Click here to listen to a short presentation about sidewalk maintenance and repair in New York City.
DOT's Sidewalk Program's goal is to make the City's 12,750 miles sidewalks safe for pedestrians and help prevent injuries caused by defective sidewalks.
Under Section 19-152 of the Administrative Code of the City of New York, property owners are responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining sidewalks adjoining their properties. Sidewalk Inspectors inspect sidewalks and notify the property owner of needed repairs. In the event timely repairs are not made by the property owner, the City MAY hire private construction firms to make the repairs. The City bills the property owner for the costs of the repairs.
DOT is piloting an Expedited Sidewalk Repair Program from October 2009 to November 2010 to assist property owners in speeding the repair of sidewalks next to their property. Under the pilot property owners with sidewalk violations can request that DOT perform the necessary repair work and then the City will bill the property owner through the Department of Finance. Repair or replacement work would begin within 45 days of the DOT processing your request.
At this time the pilot is only for the borough of Queens. If you are interested in participating in this pilot and you own property in Queens you can learn more about the program and find a request form in this brochure.
