Traffic Sign Complaints

How do I Report a Complaint?
Complaints concerning signs which are missing, illegible, or vandalized should be reported to the New York City Call Center, 311, or fill out the Traffic Sign Repair Request Form. In order to expedite the processing of your complaints, be prepared to give the exact location of the sign. The Department prioritizes repairs to signs which have a direct impact on safety. These include Stop signs, One Way signs, Do Not Enter signs, Yield signs and certain School signs.

The Borough Traffic Engineering units will also replace certain parking regulations if their absence causes a break in Street Cleaning regulation, or otherwise causes confusion.

Complaints can be reported 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How Long Should This Take?
The Department's goal is to repair all safety-related signs within 9 business days.

How Can I Request a New Traffic Sign?
You can request the installation of a traffic sign by writing to Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan at the Department of Transportation, 40 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013. Or send an Email to the Commissioner. Your letter or Email message will be forwarded to the Borough Traffic Engineering unit, which will conduct a preliminary study that will take into consideration traffic and pedestrian volumes, vehicular speeds, accident history, visibility, sign spacing, and other conditions. We also will conduct a field investigation. This process takes some time to complete, but it provides traffic engineers with enough information to reach decisions that will be in the best interests of public safety and efficient street operation. A study will take approximately six weeks. If the installation of a traffic sign is deemed appropriate, it will be scheduled for installation.
