FDNY members, family and friends gathered at a number of memorials to mark the fifth anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11.

Memorial Service for Families of FDNY Members Killed on September 11
Thousands of family members, friends and colleagues of the 343 FDNY members who were killed on September 11, 2001, gathered at a memorial service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan on September 10. Tributes by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano marked the past, present and future of the Department. The ceremony also included music by Irish tenor Ronan Tynan and a candlelit tribute by the families.

World Trade Center Site
Bells were tolled at 8:46 and 9:03 a.m., marking the times the planes hit the two Towers, as well as 9:59 and 10:29 a.m., marking the times the Towers fell, to honor the 2,749 individuals lost in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. Firefighters and EMS personnel from around the world came in support of FDNY members as they remembered their 343 comrades who were lost that day.

Firefighter’s Memorial
Firefighters came together at the Firefighters Memorial Monument on the Upper West Side of Manhattan to pay tribute to their own. A wreath was laid in front of the white marble monument to remember all those lost.

Fire Department Headquarters
A small ceremony was held at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn to honor the memory of all firefighters and EMS personnel lost on September 11, 2001, including First Deputy Fire Commissioner William Feehan, Chief of Department Peter Ganci, Assistant Chief Gerald Barbara and Assistant Chief Donald Burns, all of whom responded from Headquarters on the morning of the terrorist attacks. A wreath was laid to honor those lost and a tree was planted in their memory.

Engine 15/Ladder 18/Battalion 4
Members of the FDNY and NYPD gathered at the firehouse nicknamed “Fort Pitt” to have breakfast with President George W. Bush and pay tribute to all uniformed members lost in the terror attacks.
