New York City Fire Department

FDNY Giving Away Batteries in Neighborhoods throughout New York

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta announced the Department will be distributing more than 145,000 free batteries for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the City in “Operation Fresh Battery.”

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are required by New York law in all residences. They should be placed outside each bedroom or sleeping area and on every floor of the home - and they should be tested once a week.

The FDNY Foundation along with the Fire Safety Education Unit will be in locations throughout the city in the coming weeks, giving out free 9-volt batteries and fire safety education information. Firefighters also will be on hand to answer all fire safety questions.

More dates will be posted, so check back to find other events in your neighborhood. Or for information about how to keep your home fire safe, visit our fire safety information page.
