Eight Members of Fire Service Receive Thomas Brick Scholarships
A ceremony at FDNY Headquarters on July 9 memorialized Firefighter Thomas Brick in two ways - with the presentation of eight college scholarships to FDNY members and the dedication of training equipment in his honor. Firefighter Brick from Ladder 36 made the Supreme Sacrifice on Dec. 16, 2003, while operating at a four-alarm fire in upper Manhattan.

FDNY Blasting Unit Oversees the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks
Although Independence Day is a treasured holiday for many New Yorkers, it’s considered one of the busiest days of the year for the FDNY’s Blasting Unit. They oversee the six barges used for the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks display, each loaded with 6,000 to 7,000 fireworks shells and rockets.

FDNY Team Takes Third in International EMS Competition
A team of three FDNY competition all-stars - EMS Lt. James Fallar, Paramedic Joe Hudak and EMT Joe Fortis - took third place in an international EMS Competition that pitted them against 90 countries from around the world. The competition in Prague, Czech Republic, included 13 different scenarios that started at 8:30 a.m. on May 30 and ran through 4:30 a.m. the following day.

FDNY Department Medal Day 2009
Although the weather was dreary, June 3 was a bright day for the FDNY as it celebrated its 140th Medal Day ceremony at Pace University Auditorium in Manhattan. During the annual ceremony, 51 members and four companies received awards for the heroism they demonstrated at emergencies throughout the five boroughs.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta will preside over the annual FDNY Medal Day Ceremony on the steps of City Hall on Wed., June 3. Medals will be awarded to fire and EMS officers, fire marshals, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs and fire companies who went above and beyond the call of duty, displaying courage under the most extreme conditions.

New Fire Code for New York City
The Fire Department’s four-year Fire Code Revision Project culminated on May 28, 2008, with the City Council’s enactment of a new Fire Code for New York City. The legislation, Local Law No. 26 of 2008, was signed by Mayor Bloomberg on June 3, 2008.
