The success of the Fire Department's mission depends
on motivated personnel with the management and
leadership skills necessary to lead the Department into
the twenty-first century. The professional development
of
of firefighters of all ranks requires a level of education
necessary to meet the challenges of the complex technology
and operations associated with contemporary fire protection,
and suppression.
In furtherance of this mission, the Bureau of Training
is pleased to offer undergraduate and graduate level
courses in conjunction with John Jay College. John
Jay College is a liberal arts college with a specialized
mission that includes fire science and protection management.
The College offers eight additional credits, including
three in fire science, for matriculated students who
complete the First Line Supervisors Program. Limited
tuition remission programs are available for members
who matriculate in undergraduate degree programs.
Undergraduate courses, related to the interests and
needs of FDNY personnel, will be offered at the Fire
Academy starting February 1998. Courses will be offered
by John Jay College of Criminal Justice, in association
with the FDNY Fire Academy. These courses respond to
new career and promotion requirements recently announced
by the Commissioner.
