Baby Mama releases in theatres Friday, April 25, 2008. The film shot in New
York City from April to July of 2007, and employed over 1700 New Yorkers.
In Baby Mama, we meet the newly promoted vice president for Round Earth
Organic Market, Kate Holbrook, played by Tina Fey. Fastidious Kate has her life
in order: a job she loves, a guru boss (played by comedy icon Steve Martin) who
adores her, a beautiful apartment and financial security. But having put a
personal life on the back burner while she concentrated on her career – to the
chagrin of her mother – Kate discovers, at age 37, a deep yearning to have a
baby. With only a million-to-one chance of getting pregnant, Kate visits a
pricey surrogacy center, which arranges a meeting between her and her soon to be
“Baby Mama”, Angie Ostrowiski, played by Fey’s SNL partner, Amy Poehler.
Poehler and Fey are both improv comedy veterans, and were fan favorites
during their stint as co-hosts of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update. Their
improvisational ability was welcomed on the set as Writer/Director Michael
McCullers is an SNL vet and close friend of both actresses.
McCullers
said that working on set, “sometimes working with them is just saying ‘Action,’
and then I watch and see what they do, then I laugh at it, then I say, ‘Cut.’
Every day on the set, they added a little something that made it better, which
is a luxury for me.” The film boasts an ensemble cast, including leads Fey, who
currently produces and stars in “30 Rock” in NYC, and Amy Poehler, who currently
stars in Saturday Night Live in NYC. The film also stars Greg Kinnear, who
recently shot the film Unknown in NYC, Maura Tierney, who recently shot the film
Diggers in NYC, broadway veteran Holland Taylor, and screen icon Sigourney
Weaver, who recently shot The Girl in the Park in NYC. Romany Malco and Dax
Shepard are also featured.
McCullers set the story in Fey’s hometown of Philadelphia. She claims to have
been “excited my natural Philadelphia accent is finally appropriate.” Still,
leaving a young son, devoted husband, and a hit TV show for a shoot in
Philadelphia didn’t seem very practical. Thanks to the “Made in NY” tax credit,
Fey was able to get the best of both worlds – shooting a majority of the
Philadelphia-set picture in New York City, while spending a small number of days
in the City of Brotherly Love.
