Students learn about filmmaking through the RECYouth program.
August 1, 2006 - The next generation of Spike Lees and Martin Scorseses are honing their skills this summer through New York City's RECYouth Program, which gives residents between the ages of 6 and 19 the opportunity make their own films. The free program, presented by the Parks Department, takes place in recreation centers in all five boroughs, teaching participants various facets of camera operation and digital video and audio production. Every week, more than 200 of the City's youth take part in the program.
The program's participants are not only trained in the technical aspects of filmmaking, but also have the opportunity to develop their writing skills by creating projects ranging from documentaries to fictional narratives. These films are often featured on New York-based television stations, such as NYC TV and NY1, and at public screenings and festivals around the city. A select number of participants are chosen to be part of the RECYouth Press Corps, which creates public service announcements for the Parks Department.
The culmination of this program to celebrate the achievements of young filmmakers is the RECYouth Multimedia Festival, which will be held on August 24th at the Chelsea Clearview West. As participants screen their projects for peers and industry professionals, they gain real-world experience and important feedback on their work. Click here for more information on the Festival.
