Celebrate Black History Month at the World Famous Apollo Theater

February 2, 2009 - The world famous Apollo Theater’s Education and Community Outreach Department presents a variety of entertaining and diverse events to celebrate Black History Month during the Apollo’s 75th Anniversary.

Apollo Amateur Night presented by the Coca-Cola Company
Since 1934, aspiring artists have graced the stage of the Apollo hoping the approval of the infamous audience will launch their careers in the entertainment world. The Apollo Amateur Night alumni is an impressive, ever-expanding roster of world class talent including such legends as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Ben E. King, Jackie Wilson, the Isley Brothers, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Fat Joe, Lauryn Hill, Dru Hill, and many others.

Time: 7:30PM
Type: In honor of the theater’s 75th Anniversary, the first 75 tickets of each show are $7.50, Additional tickets are $17-$27. Tickets are available through the Apollo Theater Box Office or Ticketmaster.

The Harlem Meer Social Hour presents: The Apollo Theater in Central Park
The Apollo Theater will bring some of its magic to Central Park when historian Billy Mitchell illuminates, from its construction to the many legends that have performed on its stage, how the Apollo became a source of pride and a bastion of culture and achievement. This rich interpretation will be followed by a performance by an Amateur Night Winner! Refreshments are provided and mingling is encouraged.

An Open House at the Apollo Theater, sponsored by CHASE
Take a tour of the impressive theatre, including onstage and backstage. Learn the history of Harlem’s iconic jewel and enjoy a mock Amateur Night show, film screenings, discussions, and information about the remarkable community that surrounds and enhances the Apollo.
Dates: Saturday, February 21 and 28. Sunday, February 22 and March 1.
Times: On the Saturdays: from Noon-5pm / On the Sundays: 2pm-7pm
