The administrative staff of Queens Hospital Center, a member of the Queens Health Network and affiliate of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, is proud to announce the eagerly awaited opening of its new facility.
The
new hospital is situated on five acres, constituting roughly 25 percent of the
existing hospital's total campus area. Encompassing 360,000 square feet, it is
comprised of 200 inpatient beds and features both primary and specialty
ambulatory care services. There are adult, pediatric and psychiatric emergency
services; operative services include same-day surgery and inpatient surgery. In
addition, the new hospital contains both private and semi-private rooms,
providing a more personalized environment for the delivery of care.
Last year, QHC received 338,319 ambulatory care visits - the most in the region. QHC also received 72,915 Emergency Room visits offering our patients the finest medical care when they need it the most.
Queens
Hospital Center now maintains three Centers of Excellence in Cancer Care,
Women's Health and Diabetes Management. It also features more than $20 million
in new state-of-the-art equipment including a linear accelerator for radiation
oncology to be used in the treatment of cancer and special monitoring equipment
for intensive care, telemetry and emergency patients.
Dr. Debra Brennessel, QHC's Director of Ambulatory Care for the past four years who previously served as Associate Director of Medicine from 1992 to 1997, has been chosen to head the new Women's Center of Excellence. Women's health services are now incorporated all on one floor, including obstetrics and gynecology, primary care, labor and delivery, neonatal and postpartum care inpatient units and mammography. Dr. Margaret Kemeny, a nationally renowned surgical oncologist who was recently listed in both the Castle Connolly Guide and New York Magazine as one the top doctors in the metropolitan area, is Director of the Center of Excellence in Cancer Care, located on the fifth floor of the new hospital. Dr. Issac Sachmechi, Chief of Endocrinology for the past twelve years, is now Director of the Center of Excellence in Diabetes Management.
The Queens Hospital Center modernization project constitutes one of the first developments that the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation has completed in partnership with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, the largest public building construction company in the United States. It was executed at a cost of $149 million in capital dollars. The success of this four-year project is due in large part to the firm commitment and tireless efforts of former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and former Queens Borough President Claire Shulman.
