Little Apple Heroes
The Little Apple Heroes were selected from among hundreds of children’s entries this May, in a contest sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, the Mayor’s Volunteer Center, and Columbia Pictures. The contest encouraged children to think like heroes and develop plans to improve their communities. One winner was selected from each borough.

Each Little Apple Hero’s plan of action was realized on June 25-26, when they teamed with their family, friends and a volunteer task force from the Mayor’s Volunteer Center to implement their projects. Thadius Regisford, 8, fed the homeless at the Open Door Church of God in Brooklyn; Gabriele Dileone, 9, put up corkboard to showcase the artwork of autistic children at PS 37 in Staten Island; Max Nocerino, 10, played bingo with seniors at the Forest View Center for Rehab & Nursing in Queens; Shaliyah Ivey, 8, planted flowers in Vidalia Park in the Bronx; and Anisha Brooks, 11, spruced up Morningside Park in Manhattan.

As part of their prize winnings, the "Little Apple Heroes" also appeared on the Today show with Spiderman star Tobey Maguire.
