Press Credentials

Please read the instructions before you complete the on-line press credential request form. After you have read and complied with the instructions below, you can print the form and complete it.

NOTE: Upon completion of the application, applicants should call the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM Monday through Friday to schedule an appointment.  No applications can be accepted by mail.



Press Credential On-line Application Instructions

This application is to be completed by each applicant (printed or typed) and certified by your Editor/News Director only. Department Supervisors are not authorized to certify applications.

Working Press Cards are for those individuals who are full-time, news staff employees, whose routine duties require them to cross police and fire lines and are regularly involved in spot emergency news coverage, i.e.; shootings, fires, homicides, etc.

Press Identification Cards are issued to full-time members of the press who do not hold the Working Press Cards but do have a need for an official Police Department identification card in order to fulfill their various assignments of crossing police lines at the scene of a "non-emergency" news event such as a parade, theatre premiere, etc.. Press Identification cards will not be granted to individuals who are employed in the business, advertising or circulation departments.

Press Vehicle Cards will only be issued to staff who also apply and qualify for the Working Press Card. In order to receive this card a current copy of the applicant's motor vehicle registration and a cover letter from applicants News Director/Editor requesting permit must be included with their application.

First time and renewal applicants must include the following items with their application, should any items be omitted the application will be returned.
  1. A cover letter from the applicant’s News Director/Editor requesting credentials for the individual. (If numerous applications are being filed one letter with all the applicants names will suffice.)
  2. Three (3) tear sheets attributed to the applicant for print media.*
  3. Radio and television applicants must submit a VHS tape or audio tape of their work. (This tape will be returned)*
  4. Organizations applying for the first time should contact D.C.P.I. for assistance.
  5. Independently employed applicants must submit a reference letter from at least TWO agencies that have recently hired them on a freelance basis and the Company Name box on the application should be filled in with self employed.
* All documented work must be within the previous six months and must demonstrate a need for credentials.

Working Press Reserve Cards, Press Vehicle Cards and Reserve Press Vehicle Cards are applied for by the agency News Director/Editor on company letterhead indicating the amount needed. These cards are issued in a limited capacity and should be given out on a controlled basis by the News Director/Editor.


Conditions of all Press Credentials

THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS FOR THIS PROCESS.

Failure to comply with these instructions will cause a delay or disapproval of your request.

In consideration of receiving this police card the person or news organization named hereon, in accepting and using it, expressly agrees that:
  1. It may be taken away by competent authority at any time.
  2. The bearer assumes all risk in case of accident.
  3. It must be worn fully exposed at all times when bearer is at or within police or fire lines.
  4. The bearer shall, upon termination of employment, surrender card to their employer, who shall forward it to the NYPD Deputy Commissioner, Public Information.
  5. The bearer will report the loss or theft of card to their employer, precinct concerned, and to the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information (646) 610-6700 and assume all costs for replacement.
  6. Anyone who makes, engraves, unlawfully uses or possesses an official police card is subject to punishment by fine - not less than $250 and/or imprisonment - not more than 30 days. (Sec. 14-108 Adm. Code).
