STATEMENT BY OEM COMMISSIONER JOHN T. ODERMATT ON POWER SITUATION IN BROOKLYN

Today’s high temperatures and humidity has led to heavy demands on Con Edison’s power networks in their Park Slope and Bay Ridge networks.  The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has activated its Emergency Operations Center as of 1800 hours and will continue to closely monitor the situation.

The Park Slope network covers the following neighborhoods:

• Park Slope
• Kensington
• Winston Terrace
• Greenwood Heights
• Borough Park

The Park Slope network is bounded by Atlantic Avenue on the north; the Belt Parkway on the south; 5th, 10th and 11th Avenues on the west; and East 15th and East 16th Avenues, the Long Island Railroad, and 19th and 20th Avenues on the east.

The Bay Ridge network covers the following neighborhoods:

• Bay Ridge
• Dyker Heights
• Sunset Park

To help prevent a possible (brownout) (blackout) in (in neighborhood OR citywide), OEM and Con Edison are asking customers to turn off all non-essential appliances and electronic equipment, and to curb electrical usage in general—for instance, by turning off lights in vacant rooms.

This voluntary load reduction will help ensure that no additional Con Edison customers will experience an interruption in their power supply.
