Background - A lot can change in 25 years. By 1981, our City's near-bankruptcy caused basic services like schools, safety, and sanitation to deteriorate. Since then, almost everything - except New York's essential magic - has changed. We are the safest big city in the United States - and one of the greenest, too. Our economy is strong. We have some of the best schools and the cleanest streets. But success brings its own challenges. Now we are ready to look ahead for the next 25 years and address the physical barriers to maintaining and improving our quality of life. To sustain the City we love today, we must begin planning for tomorrow.
The top three things you should know about new york over the next 25 years
We will be getting BIGGER.
(much bigger) Our infrastructure will be getting OLDER.
(and it's pretty old to begin with) Our environment will be AT RISK.
(and that's not a risk worth taking)
What impacts will we face from one million more people? What infrastructure needs should we get ready for? How will our environment become more vulnerable?
New York's resurgence has attracted record numbers of new residents. By planning for growth, we can maintain our quality of life and make sure our City stays as open as ever.

By 2030, nearly all of our major infrastructure networks will be more than a century old – and under new pressures. Together we can maintain and modernize these systems to compete as a 21st century city.

With rising sea levels – and temperatures – we’re already starting to experience the effects of global warming. We must conserve our City's resources and do our part to fight against climate change.

What we heard

After PlaNYC was announced on December 12, 2006, we met with over 100 Advocacy Organizations, held 11 neighborhood leader and town hall meetings throughout the five boroughs, presented the challenges of PlaNYC to 50 organizations and received over 3000 emails through our website. New Yorkers in all five boroughs responded during the four-month public outreach process, offering suggestions that have helped form a plan to address the critical challenges ahead and to create a sustainable City. This is what we heard.
