We will reforest 2,000
acres of parkland
The City will expand efforts to reforest approximately
2,000 acres of parkland by 2017, without compromising
space for existing ballfields. Reforestation will take
place in Fresh Kills Park in Staten Island, Cunningham
Park in Queens, Van Cortlandt in the Bronx, Highbridge
in Manhattan, and other parks around the city at a cost
of $118 million.
Progress (as of 4/22/08):
To date, the City has planted over 19,500 new trees
under the PlaNYC Reforestation Initiative. Parks' Natural
Resources Group convened a mini-conference on "Trees
and Woodlands for the Future" in November 2007
to highlight the Initiative. A multi-disciplined Technical
Advisory Group has been assembled, to bring together
scientists from institutions and other government agencies
to enhance our reforestation efforts. Bids for capital
contract services were disseminated last Fall. In addition,
a design/planning consultant was brought on board to
comprehensively address reforestation plans and future
planting opportunities. On April 12, the City planted
20,000 trees at 14 sites across the city in conjunction
with New York Cares "Hands On New York" Day.
