Richard Rodgers, born June 28, 1902 in Arverne, Queens,
was a Columbia and Institute of Musical Art student.
He partnered with lyricist Lorenz Hart and wrote the
music for many successful Broadway shows, some which
celebrated New York life: Garrick Gaieties (1925), On
Your Toes (1936), Babes in Arms (1937), and Pal Joey
(1940). Their songs included "I'll Take Manhattan" (1925),
"Coney Island" (1930), & "Harlemania" (1930).
After Lorenz Hart's death in November 1943, Richard
Rodgers teamed up with Oscar Hammerstein II and produced
such immortal hits as "Oklahoma!" (1943), "Carousel"
(1945), "South Pacific" (1949), "The King and I" (1951),
and "The Sound of Music", (1959).
Richard Rodgers died in his native New
York on December 30, 1979
(Posted on June 28, 2002, to celebrate the centennial
