SBS Hosts Procurement Fair to Help Local Minority and Women-owned Businesses Do Business with the City
In June the New York City Department of Small Business Services hosted the second annual Citywide procurement fair, designed to help local minority and women-owned companies increase the amount of business they do with the City of New York. The event brought more than 500 firms certified with the City as Minority or Women-owned Business Enterprises (M/WBEs) together with purchasers from more than 50 City and State agencies and public authorities as well as several private-sector companies which subcontract with minority and women-owned firms, for information sessions, workshops and networking. Angie Kamath to Lead Workforce Development
Angie Kamath has been appointed Deputy Commissioner for Workforce Development. In this role, Kamath will build employment opportunities for New Yorkers in the City's fastest-growing sectors while meeting the hiring and training needs of New York City businesses. Full Story

Mayor Bloomberg and Speaker Quinn Open Newly-Renovated Workforce1 Career and NYC Business Solutions Centers
On April 25, Mayor Bloomberg, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Commissioner Robert Walsh, Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall, State Senator Malcolm Smith and Council members Leroy Comrie, Jr., and Tom White, Jr. officially opened the newly-renovated Workforce1 Career Center and NYC Business Solutions Center at 168-25 Jamaica Avenue in Queens. The renovated Center in Jamaica offers additional training and recruitment rooms and computer stations and a revamped communications system. Full Story

Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Walsh Present 2008 Neighborhood Achievement Awards
On July 14, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Robert W. Walsh presented the 2008 New York City Neighborhood Achievement Awards to 11 recipients at Gracie Mansion. The awards honor outstanding organizations, businesses and individuals for strengthening the City’s neighborhoods and commercial corridors. Citigroup New York State Director of Community Relations Eileen Auld and Con Edison Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Frances Resheske joined the Mayor at the awards ceremony on behalf of their organizations, which sponsored the event.
