NYC Voter Assistance Commission Names New Executive Director/Coordinator

(New York) August 2004 - The NYC Voter Assistance Commission (VAC) today announced its appointment of Onida Coward Mayers as Executive Director/Coordinator. Ms. Coward Mayers was a mayoral nominee for the position. VAC, the first government agency of its kind in the nation, was created in 1988 to fulfill a nonpartisan mission of facilitating voter registration and participation.

Dr. Jeffrey Kraus, VAC Chairman said "Our thanks to the Mayor for nominating Ms. Coward Mayers to serve as VAC's Executive Director/Coordinator. Her nomination reflects the Mayor's commitment to VAC and its mission, and I look forward to working with Ms. Coward Mayers in promoting a more involved electorate."

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Coward Mayers was the Founding Director of Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT). An executive with 17 years of media and coalition building experience, Ms. Coward Mayers is an award-winning journalist who holds an MBA from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College and a B.A. from Buffalo State College.

"As the Executive Director/Coordinator of VAC," said Ms. Coward Mayers, "I look forward to conducting outreach to communities in all five boroughs and offering voting information that will empower citizens and strengthen our democracy."

Jane Kalmus, Vice Chair of VAC added, "The appointment of Ms. Coward Mayers will help VAC fulfill its promise of helping New Yorkers to participate in the democratic process."

Ms. Coward Mayers assumed her duties on August 2, 2004.
