The enumerated population of New York City’s was 8,804,190 as of April 1, 2020, a record high population. This is an increase of 629,057 people since the 2010 Census. The city is characterized by the constant ebb and flow of people that results in a unique level of population “churn” and diversity.
To understand the city’s population, our demographers and geographers compile, analyze, and disseminate data, inclusive of the U.S. Census Bureau’s decennial census and its annual American Community Survey.
NYC Planning’s analyses of these data are essential to planning for an aging population, to determining how and where to offer language services, to infrastructure and capital planning.
NYC Planning works closely with the U.S. Census Bureau to ensure an accurate enumeration of the city’s housing stock and population, and on the methods of data collection and dissemination of federal surveys.
