NYC Construction Safety Report Released

Documenting construction safety trends in NYC is a vital step toward diagnosing issues in the construction industry and coming up with solutions. DOB released its second-annual NYC Construction Safety Report to the public last week, in part to show where work site incidents are occurring and why.

Inside our new report you'll find a comprehensive review of safety trends, building construction data, worker incidents, and Department-issued enforcement actions taken over the past year, as well as info on how that stacks up to previous years.

The 2021 report shows that building construction-related incidents have declined for the third year in a row, despite an increase in overall construction activity in NYC.

Extensions Available for Gas Piping Inspections

An amendment to Local Law 152 of 2016 now allows building owners to receive a 180-day extension for the inspection of their building's gas piping system and submission of the Gas Piping System Periodic Inspection Certification form.

As of March 22nd, 2022, requests for 180-day extensions can be submitted to DOB through the this online portal. The option to submit an extension request is under Location Information.

Elevator Industry Licensing Requirements

There are over 70,000 passenger elevators in our vertical city, and thousands more non-passenger elevator devices.

To ensure that work on elevators in our City is conducted in a safe manner, the New York State Elevator Safety Act requires that all elevator workers hold licensing from both New York City and the State of New York as of January 1st, 2022.

DOB elevator inspectors will be checking during field visits that all elevator Technicians and Helpers have the appropriate Elevator Agency Technician License or Helper Registration Card. Failure to produce the required license or Registration Card during a DOB inspection will result in the issuance of a summons to the permit holder.

Site Safety Plan Submissions

Until Further Notice, Site Safety Plans for General Construction (GC) and Foundation (FO) jobs in DOB NOW can be submitted by email to DOB's Construction Safety Compliance (CSC) Plan Examination Unit before the job is approved.

The CSC Plan Examination Unit will provide approved plans by email that will then need to be uploaded in DOB NOW: Build as a Site Safety request to proceed with permit.
