DOB is Challenging You to "Hack the Building Code"

Have an idea on how to improve construction and design in our city?

We want to hear about it!

Our 2021 "Hack the Building Code" Innovation Challenge has officially kicked off, and we are now accepting submissions from the public on ways to improve the ways we design, construct and maintain our city of over 1.1 million buildings.

The challenge is an open call to both industry professionals and the public, looking for the best ideas on how we can make our city's buildings and construction sites safer, more efficient, more resilient, and more sustainable.

The application deadline for submissions is November 3rd, 2021.

Last year's winners from our 2020 "Hack The Building Code" Challenge and our Carbon Neutrality Innovation Challenge included a wide range of ideas to improve our city's built environment which were showcased at our digital industry conferences. DOB also issued Buildings Bulletins in support of these innovators, official guidance documents which provide technical approvals for the use of products, processes and technologies that are not specifically enumerated in our Codes.

Construction Dashboard Q3 Data Out Today

The latest permit data from the Department of Buildings is now available on our NYC Construction Dashboard, a quarterly analytics report which shows a snapshot of permit activity in NYC.

The calendar year Q3 2021 data, released today, shows that a 38,385 total construction work permits were issued in NYC (initial and renewal). That number is up from the 37,356 permits issued in Q3 2020, and the 34,913 permits issued in Q3 2019.

1,743 New Building permits (initial and renewal) were issued in NYC during Q3 2021, which is up from the 1,718 issued in Q3 2020, but down from the 1,868 issued in Q3 2019.

FAIRER Fines Program Open

Still owe OATH/ECB judgments related to DOB-issued violations?

Now is your chance to reduce those fines by up to 75%, thanks to the NYC Department of Finance and their new FAIRER (Fine and Interest Reduction Enabling Recovery) Program.

Running through December 20, 2021, this limited-run program allows you to pay a reduced amount for eligible Environmental Control Board judgments related to city agency violations.

The FAIRER Program is open to any individual or business named on a city-issued OATH/ECB violation, and is a great opportunity to pay off judgements related to DOB-issued violations at a greatly reduced cost.

ZRD1 and CCD1 Now on "Buildings on my Block"

DOB has made updates to the Buildings on my Block Portal, our searchable online database, organized by Community Board for easy reference, which provides information on major construction projects filed in the Department's Buildings Information System (BIS).

Construction Code Determinations (CCD1) and Zoning Resolution Determinations (ZRD1) issued by the Department are now available on the portal, allowing members of the public to quickly find where these official Department determinations have been made at construction sites across the five boroughs.
