Dear fellow New Yorker,
The Adams administration is taking action and continuing to make investments that are making our city more livable and vibrant. This includes cracking down on illegal smoke and cannabis shops with “Operation Padlock to Protect." In this five-borough operation, which will accelerate in the coming weeks, the City established formal rules allowing the New York City Sheriff’s Office—along with other local law enforcement agencies—to padlock smoke and cannabis shops operating without a license.
Tell the City what projects you want funded in your communities. From May 1st through June 12th, New Yorkers aged 11 and up, regardless of immigration status, can decide how to spend $3.5 million of city funds on projects in their communities. Last year, in the first People’s Money process, New Yorkers voted to fund 46 expense projects. The projects address a wide range of community needs, including mental health, food safety, youth programming, skills building and arts. To learn more about the process, visit participate.nyc.gov.
This past week, CAU was proud to celebrate Mother’s Day in various communities throughout the city. We hope everyone had a joyous Mother’s Day filled with love and appreciation for the significant role they play in our lives. Finally, we also want to recognize upcoming holidays and celebrations: on 5/13 City Hall will be lit for Vesak, also known as “Buddha Day”, and on 5/14 when City Hall will be lit for Israel Independence Day (Yom Ha’atzmaut).
For the latest updates, please follow CAU on Twitter and Facebook, and be sure to check out the Mayor's "Week In Review" video below.
All the best, Fred Kreizman Commissioner, Community Affairs Unit Office of the Mayor |

That means that all New York City public schools are now composting their food waste — putting their orange peels, uneaten pizza crusts, compostable food trays, and more to beneficial use for the city and for the planet, helping gardens grow, and creating power through renewable energy here in the New York City area.
Mayor Adams Initiates Operation to Shut Down Unlicensed Smoke and Cannabis Shops Across Five Boroughs
Mayor Adams announced the start of a five-borough operation — that will accelerate in the coming weeks — to shut down unlicensed smoke and cannabis shops in the City of New York. After Mayor Adams successfully advocated for and municipalities were given the regulatory authority by the state to finally shut down these illegal shops plaguing city streets last month, the city established formal rules allowing the New York City’s Sheriff Office — along with other local law enforcement agencies — to padlock smoke and cannabis shops without a license.
Mayor Adams Announces City Hall, Municipal Buildings to be lit Blue, Yellow, Red, White, and Orange to Commemorate Vesak Celebrations
Mayor Eric Adams announced that City Hall and several municipal buildings will — for the first time — be lit in the international Buddhist flag colors of blue, yellow, red, white, and orange in recognition of Vesak celebrations, also known as Buddha Day.
