Dear New Yorker,
CAU hosted a Community Conversations on Public Safety in Forest Hills within NYPD Patrol Borough Queens North. We appreciate the Queens community coming out to discuss how we can work together to make our city safer for all New Yorkers. In that vein, Mayor Adams signed two bills aimed at tackling gun violence in New York City. The first bill helps to track data from illegal gun trafficking within New York City, while the second bill designates the new boundaries of the Times Square sensitive location, which prohibits the concealed carrying of firearms within the sensitive zone.
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th. This weekend Mayor Adams marched in the Brooklyn Hispanic Heritage Parade and the Panamanian Parade. A few weeks ago, the Mayor hosted a Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month celebration at Gracie Mansion. New York City is proud to be home to the second largest metropolitan area concentration of Latinos in the country.
The story of the African diaspora is New York City’s story. Mayor Adams hosted an African Heritage Month reception at Gracie Mansion last week. A few weeks ago, the Mayor raised the African Union flag at Bowling Green. On the occasion of the African Union’s 20th anniversary, we were proud to celebrate with the community.

Pay It Off
From October 17th to 31st, noncustodial parents can pay off their NYC DSS child support arrears twice as fast! OCSS will double the debt reduction when a payment of at least $500 is made toward their DSS arrears during October (up to the amount they owe). For those with a current support order, the court ordered child support amount must be paid first. Then the Pay It Off payment can reduce the debt by double. In addition, parents may be eligible for additional reductions up to $15,000 over three years. Pay off your principle in full and all of the interest you owe to the DSS will also be eliminated.
The Pay It Off program has been used by over 3,000 noncustodial parents to reduce $16 million of debt owed to the NYC Department of Social Services (DSS). The average debt reduction per case is $5,558. Don’t miss this opportunity to lower or eliminate your DSS child support debt!

Highlights From the City Hall Press Office: |
Deliveristas Hubs to Serve Food Delivery Workers: Mayor Adams and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Schumer announced a first-of-its-kind hub program for New York City's 65,000 delivery workers that uses existing infrastructure, like vacant city newsstands, to provide a place to rest and recharge. Street Deliveristas Hubs will create a place for delivery workers to seek shelter from the elements, charge both their electric bicycles and cell phones, and, by revitalizing these empty public spaces, ensure New York City's public spaces serve all.
Program to Help Cover College Expenses for Students in Foster Care: Mayor Adams and ACS Commissioner Dannhauser announced “College Choice,” a program that will provide college students in foster care with greater support systems, including financial support, so they can attend college without having to worry about the hefty price tag. ACS will help pay remaining costs of college tuition— up to $15,000 each year — in addition to any room and board not covered by a student’s financial aid package. College students in foster care will also receive a $60 daily stipend per year, which can be used towards food, clothing, transportation, and more.
Asylum Seeker State of Emergency Declared: Mayor Adams issued Emergency Executive Order 224, formally directing all relevant city agencies to coordinate their efforts to respond to the asylum seeker humanitarian crisis and construct the city’s Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers. The Mayor also called for emergency federal and state aid to handle the continued influx of asylum seekers as the city projects costs of more than $1 billion related to asylum seekers in this fiscal year alone, as well as expedited work permits, a national decompression strategy, and a resettlement strategy. With more than 17,000 asylum seekers bussed to the city since the spring, the Adams administration estimates that once the asylum seekers from today’s buses are provided shelter, the city will surpass the highest number of people in recorded history in its shelter system.
