Dear New Yorker,
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic as they recover in the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona. Mayor Adams has been on the ground, assessing the damages, and distributing resources to those affected. The City encourages people to make donations through trusted nonprofits. The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City has created a webpage, which directs those interested in donating to those affected by Hurricane Fiona to some trusted nonprofits. We stand with our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Wishing the Jewish community a sweet and happy Rosh Hashanah. Shana Tova!

Do you know an impactful advocate for survivors of gender-based violence in NYC?
We, at ENDGBV, think it’s important to recognize and uplift the boundless heroic efforts of advocates working on behalf of NYC survivors of gender-based violence with our annual Advocates of NYC ceremony. Advocates honored in the past are a diverse group. Honorees have provided case management, mental health services, civil legal services, or job readiness training. Others lead healthy relationship workshops or educate communities and raise awareness through the performing arts, while others push for systemic change and equity in the field of gender-based violence. Highlights From the City Hall Press Office: |
COVID-19 Booster Campaign Launched: Mayor Adams and DOHMH Commissioner Dr. Vasan announced the launch of a citywide campaign to promote COVID-19 boosters this fall. With the recent rollout of bivalent booster shots by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the new campaign will encourage all eligible New Yorkers to get their booster shot for an added layer of protection for themselves and those around them. Mayor Adams also encouraged private businesses to put in place their own vaccine policies after making the private sector vaccine mandate optional. As New York City’s students head back to school, families are encouraged to ensure their children have their primary and, if eligible, booster shots after vaccines were made optional for students who participate in extracurricular activities.
Emergency Managers Deployed to Puerto Rico: Mayor Adams announced that a team of New York City employees will deploy to Puerto Rico and assist officials already there as they survey the damage caused by the hurricane. The team will join representatives from the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Agency (PREMA), the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), and other emergency responders to assess damages to infrastructure and essential services caused by the heavy rains, floods, and wind. The team will include representatives from New York City Emergency Management, New York City Department of Buildings, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and the New York City Department of Design and Construction.
Emergency Response to Support Asylum Seekers: Mayor Adams announced the city will open Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers to support the hundreds of asylum seekers arriving in New York City each day from Texas and other border states. These humanitarian relief centers will provide assistance to newly arriving individuals and families and ensure they continue to be connected to the full range of services and supports they need. Humanitarian relief centers will become the first touch point for arriving asylum seekers, helping people by immediately offering shelter, food, medical care, case work services, and a range of settlement options including through connections to family and friends inside and outside of New York City.
