  • People ages 65 and older

  • First responders
  • Public safety workers

General Information on COVID-19  

There is increasing transmission of COVID-19 in New York City and widespread transmission across the United States and in many other countries. Read about: www.nyc.gov/COVID-19

New COVID-19 Variant

What we know - Viruses constantly change through mutation, and new variants of a virus are expected to occur over time. Sometimes new variants emerge and disappear. Other times, new variants emerge and persist. Multiple variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 have been documented in the United States and globally during this pandemic.

 

What we do not know - Scientists are working to learn more about these variants, and more studies are needed to understand:

  • How widely these new variants have spread
  • How the new variants differ
  • How the disease caused by these new variants differs from the disease caused by other variants that are currently circulating

What it means- Public health officials are studying these variants quickly to learn more to control their spread. They want to understand whether the variants:

  • Spread more easily from person to person
  • Cause milder or more severe disease in people
  • Are detected by currently available viral tests
  • Respond to medicines currently being used to treat people for COVID-19
  • Change the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. There is no evidence that this is occurring, and most experts believe this is unlikely to occur because of the nature of the immune response to the virus.

Test and Trace Corps

The NYC Test & Trace Corps is a public health initiative to fight the threat of COVID-19. 

Test – Get a COVID-19 Test and an Antibody test to know if you have been exposed to the virus. – The tests are FREE, confidential and safe. More than 200 testing sites now open. Learn more.

Trace – Answer the call of the Contact Tracers – they provide support to New Yorkers who test positive for COVID-19 and their close contacts. Learn more.

Seasonal Flu (Influenza) 

As the flu and COVID-19 will likely circulate at the same time this season, getting a flu vaccine is more important than ever.

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is providing a free 60-minute virtual presentation entitled COVID-19 Community Conversations: Mental Health, Equity & Resilience. The COVID-19 Community Conversation presentation covers topics including grief, trauma, coping, resilience and mental health tips.

- NYS Homes and Community Renewal Announces Expansion of Covid Rent Relief Program (February 1, 2021)

The New York State Legislature established the COVID Rent Relief Program to help households who are experiencing a loss of income during the COVID-19 crisis. This program will provide eligible households with a one-time rental subsidy that will be sent directly to the household’s landlord. 

How to Apply: Applications for COVID Rent Relief Program Available Online at https://hcr.ny.gov/RRP  The deadline to submit your COVID Rent Relief Program application is February 1, 2021.

For Help Applying: Residents who need help or have questions about their application can contact HCR’s COVID Rent Relief Program Call Center for assistance at 1-833-499-0318 or covidrentrelief@hcr.ny.gov. Call Center representatives are available Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. You can also call 311 and ask for the “Tenant Helpline” to be connected with tenant support specialists who can help you navigate the application process.

Fact Sheet: Mayor de Blasio Releases Preliminary Budget for Fiscal Year 2021

January 16, 2020

The FY21 Preliminary Budget is $95.3 billion. This budget:

  • Demonstrates caution in the face of a $6 billion State budget gap

  • Is fiscally responsible — the budget is balanced and maintains historic levels of reserves

  • Makes critical new investments that are all paid for by savings and continue to make New York City the fairest big city in America

Growth in the budget is lower than in previous years, at 2.7%. This is primarily driven by labor settlements and benefits, which make up almost two-thirds of the growth, debt service, education, and criminal justice mandates. The Preliminary Budget reflects an increase in tax revenues with a yearly growth rate of 4.6% in FY20. Our FY21 revenue estimate is cautious at 2.0% growth, reflecting signs that the local and national economies are slowing. (Click to read more).

Reaching NYC Seniors: Mayor de Blasio to Launch NYCHA Vaccination Sites for Residents 65+

January 14, 2021

First three sites to launch this weekend in Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Manhattan; program brings on-site vaccine clinics to NYCHA developments for residents 65+

NEW YORK—Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced that the City will open vaccination clinics in NYCHA developments, providing on-site vaccinations for residents 65 or older. Clinics will open at the Van Dyke I & II Houses in Brooklyn, Cassidy Lafayette Houses in Staten Island, and Polo Grounds Towers in Manhattan this coming weekend, with plans to move to different sites across the city in the coming weeks.

“Equity is the driving force of our vaccine plan, and doses must go directly to those who need them most,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “That’s why we’re meeting our most vulnerable where they are, providing vaccines to our NYCHA seniors right in their own communities.”

To reach New Yorkers over the age of 65, the City continues to broaden its outreach to seniors through its agency partners and trusted community voices. With a comprehensive outreach campaign spearheaded by the Vaccine Planning Group for Older New Yorkers, the City is partnering with local organizations to get the word out about accessible and safe vaccinations in New York City for seniors, knocking on doors, placing direct calls and robocalls, holding virtual townhalls, partnering with local health providers and more.(Click to read more).

City Launches Fair Share NYC; Free Resources to Help Small Business Owners Apply for Federal Relief Funds

January 13, 2021

NEW YORK—Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Jonnel Doris today launched Fair Share NYC, a targeted campaign to connect small business owners to federal relief funds. Federal funds include the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), a forgivable loan to help businesses keep their workforce employed, and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) Advance, a grant of up to $10,000 for businesses in low-income communities.

“PPP loans can be a lifeline for hard-hit small businesses in all five boroughs, and New York City will do everything we can to connect these businesses to the resources they deserve,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “I encourage every New Yorker to shop local and help these community anchors get back on their feet in the weeks and months to come.” (Click to read more).

Mayor de Blasio Announces 24/7 Mega Vaccination Site at Citi Field

January 12, 2021

NEW YORK—Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced that Citi Field will become a 24/7 mega vaccination site. Operated by the NYC Health + Hospitals Test & Trace Corps, the site is currently slated to launch the week of January 25th.  

"The Mets are hitting it out of the park today," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.  "By making Citi Field a 24/7 vaccination site they’re stepping up to the plate for New Yorkers across our city.” (Click to read more).
