On behalf of the Civic Engagement Commission, we want to wish you a prosperous and very Happy New Year!
In April of 2022, the CEC marked its third year anniversary! Over the past year in particular, our agency has experienced significant growth in programs and staffing, and in December of 2021, we were given the responsibility to integrate DemocracyNYC into our programs. This expanded portfolio gives the Commission a platform to engage in voter education and voter registration, in addition to providing language assistance at poll sites.
Our programs and activities would not be possible without staff, and we are excited that our team is growing to meet our programmatic demands! With additional capacity in outreach and participatory budgeting, CEC has been able to dramatically expand our touchpoints with community members and organizations as well as increase our presence on social channels and community and ethnic media.
This growth culminated in the launch of “The People’s Money” - NYC’s first-ever citywide participatory budgeting process! Since its launch in September of 2022, tens of thousands of New Yorkers have been participating by submitting ideas for projects to address community needs.
By being grounded in the practice of listening and lifting the voices and power of all communities, our vision is to build programs that foster dynamic and inclusive civic engagement and to help make New York City a national model for democratic participation. We are excited to share below some of the CEC’s shining highlights from an impactful 2022!
