THE PEOPLE’S MONEY: Citywide Participatory Budgeting

MAY 10th: Voting Begins!

We are now getting ready to begin the VOTE phase of The People’s Money - NYC’s first-ever citywide participatory budgeting process!

All New Yorkers age 11 and up, regardless of immigration status, will be able to decide how to spend $5 million of Mayoral expense funding. Between next Wednesday, May 10th and Sunday, June 25th, residents can vote to fund projects in their borough and/or neighborhood online or by paper ballot.

Residents living in any one of the five boroughs will be able to vote on a ballot for that borough. Residents living in one of 33 equity neighborhoods will also be able to vote on a ballot for their neighborhood.

Stay tuned for more information on May 10th. In the meantime, learn more about the projects on your ballot!

COMMUNITY BOARD TRAININGS

Community Boards are the first level of local government and consist of community volunteers appointed by Borough Presidents. Their charge is to weigh in on matters that affect their community regarding land use, transportation issues, small businesses, youth and education, and environmental issues, among many others.
The CEC works with all 59 Boards across the city to provide assistance and training to community board members, such as workshops on uniform meeting procedures, language access best practices, conflict resolution, and community outreach. The CEC is offering the following trainings:

  1. Fair Housing 101
  2. Efficient Board Meetings for Chair, Secretary, and/or Parliamentarian

People’s Power Coalition (PPC)

The PPC is a citywide community forum for civic empowerment. During the April meeting, the CEC highlighted ways to get involved with our programs as well as opportunities to volunteer. The CEC also invited two wonderful presenters: Ayyad Algabyali, Associate Human Rights Specialist at the NYC Commission on Human Rights, who spoke on human rights law, and Akeem Browder, social justice advocate and founder/director of the Kalief Browder Foundation, who spoke about the mental health and crisis intervention projects of his non-profit.  You can find a recording of the meeting here. The next PPC meeting is Tuesday, May 30th, at 6:00 pm. If you would like to register for upcoming PPC meetings, go to: on.nyc.gov/PeoplesPowerCoalition

Human-Centered Design Workshop

As part of our commitment to improve our agency’s ability to implement a human-centered design, we partnered with the Hasso Plattner Institute and Dr. Joann Halpern, director of HPI in NYC, for a workshop on design thinking. Improving Human Centered Design practices is a priority for the CEC, and we are committed to this practice!
