Dear Friend,
Happy New Year! I’m excited to share with you some very important updates.

Community Boards PSA

The Civic Engagement Commission is excited to announce a new video to educate New Yorkers about community boards! Produced in partnership with the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit (CAU), the short PSA explains the function and value of New York City’s 59 Community Boards!

Map of NYC Community Boards

As you might know, Community Boards are the first level of local government and consist of community volunteers appointed by Borough Presidents. Their charge is to weigh in on matters that affect their community regarding land use, transportation issues, small businesses, youth and education, and environmental issues, just to name a few.

The CEC works with all 59 Boards across the city to provide assistance and training to their members on a variety of topics that emerge from needs assessments conducted in partnership with the Community Boards themselves.

Now we need your help to reach even more New Yorkers by sharing this video with your networks!

We also encourage you to attend your community board meetings and make a difference in your community! Visit on.nyc.gov/cb to find resources on your local Board and how to apply to serve on it.

Language Assistance Advisory Committee Applications

If you are passionate about language access for New York City communities, the Commission invites you to apply for a seat in our Language Assistance Advisory Committee (LAAC).

Apply for a seat on the CEC’s Language Assistance Advisory Committee

The LAAC is a volunteer-based committee that advises us on the implementation of the Poll Site Language Assistance Program. Please apply or encourage anyone interested to apply by January 31st – it only takes 10 minutes: LAAC Application Form.

“The People’s Money” Cycle 1 (2022-23) Implementation Phase

Finally, as announced at the end of 2023, we are very excited to partner with grantee organizations that will implement 46 borough and neighborhood projects funded in Cycle 1 of “The People’s Money” citywide participatory budgeting process.

If you haven’t checked them out already, head over to Participate.nyc.gov now.
We are assisting the implementing organizations to ensure that the projects from the first Cycle are successfully implemented. At the same time, the Commission is working with Borough Assembly Committees (BACs) to review project ideas and develop them into ballot proposals for the current cycle of The People’s Money. Keep an eye out for more information about the work of the BACs on our social media channels.

Thank you for your continued support and please stay tuned for more exciting news!

Sincerely,
Dr. Sarah Sayeed
