Reflective practice is the ability to honestly reflect on your thoughts, experiences, feelings, and actions and use this assessment to improve the way you work with others. As a helping professional, this is a crucial step to providing unbiased, authentic, and nonjudgmental support to those with whom you work. The ongoing process of self-discovery and examination of your own beliefs, strengths, weaknesses, and responses will help you to adjust your practice, based on what you discover. This should be done continually throughout your career. It can be done introspectively, with a supervisor or mentor, or in a group professional development setting.
Some keys to reflective practice include:
- Examining your unconscious biases and assumptions that stem from your own life experiences and beliefs
- Acknowledging how your culture and background may influence your perspective on working with others different from you
- Recognizing your emotional triggers and using healthy coping strategies to respond appropriately and professionally
- Exploring your purpose, or the deeper “WHY,” for doing this work
- Taking stock of your own strengths and weaknesses and working to improve
- Checking in frequently on your stress level and putting self-care practices in place to manage your stress
- Asking others for feedback on your style, practice, and interpersonal skills
