There are several theories that outline the stages of human development across the lifespan. One comprehensive theory that is still discussed today was developed by Erik Erikson, a developmental psychologist. Erikson’s model of development includes eight stages, five occurring in childhood (birth to 18 years) and three occurring in adulthood, represented in the graphic below.
