On June 4, hundreds of DYCD NYC Soccer for Success program participants who have been hard at work for the 24-week program year had some fun in the sun filled with soccer activity at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx. The event was filled with tournament play, giveaways, pointers from coaches, and youth getting a special surprise from professional footballer Kwadwo Poku from the New York City Football Club, who gave participants some tips on how to perfect their game. The event was a collaboration between DYCD, the US Soccer Foundation, the New York City Football Club and the New York Redbulls.

On June 4, all DYCD-funded programs based in the Rockaways celebrated the 10th annual "Fun on the Rock" day. The event addressed the unique challenges of the Rockaway DYCD providers, including ongoing recovery in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, and being in an isolated community that has limited social and recreational venues for youth. "Fun on the Rock" gives young people in the Rockaways an opportunity to connect with their neighbors, make new friends, and enjoy healthy recreational activities. This year, Fun on the Rock was held at McGuire Fields in Bergen Beach, Brooklyn. Community-based organizations that participated included Bergen Basin, Child Center of NY, Safe Space, YMCA/Cross Island, Police Athletic League, Community Mediation Services, and The Action Center.

On June 5, the second annual "Healing the Hurt" conference was held at New York Law School. City officials, advocates, nonprofit professionals and youth development staff gathered for a daylong conference with the goals of better understanding the effects of trauma on communities and learning how to begin the healing and recovery process. The event was co-sponsored by DYCD, the Mental Health Association of New York City (MHA-NYC) and Healthfirst, and hosted by the Impact Center for Public Interest at the New York Law School.

Family Movie Night returns Tuesday, June 23, with a free outdoor screening of Disney's Finding Nemo. Following the event's success in past years, Movie Night has moved to an even bigger location, this year taking place at Hudson River Park's Pier 63. Gates open at 7:30pm, and the movie will screen at 8:30pm. Some seating, blankets and noshes will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis, or you can pack your own. Including antique cars, floats and performers, this annual parade will take place on Saturday, June 20. The pageant, founded in 1983, displays participants’ mastery of seaside mythology and wearable art. It draws hundreds of thousands of people, so get there early to snag a prime viewing spot. There is a registration fee to march, but watching the parade is free. After the colorful characters have made their way around, there's still plenty to explore nearby. On Tuesday, June 23, from 4pm to 8pm, 15 downtown museums and historic sites will open their doors and offer free admission and special programming. The participating organizations are the 9/11 Memorial Museum, African Burial Ground National Monument, Anne Frank Center USA, Federal Hall National Memorial, Fraunces Tavern Museum, Museum of American Finance, Museum of Jewish Heritage–A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, National Museum of the American Indian–New York, National Archives at New York City, Poets House, Skyscraper Museum, South Street Seaport Museum, 9/11 Tribute Center, NYC Municipal Archives Visitor Center and Wall Street Walks. Bring your friends and family to Socrates’ Solstice festival on June 21, to welcome the Summer and celebrate the longest day of the year! Not a summer-long series, but rather a series of over 1,000 free live performances throughout the entire City on June 21 to celebrate music and the longest day of the year. Youth Communication publishes short, nonfiction stories that appeal to hard-to-reach teens. Teachers and other adults use the stories and related lessons to help students improve their reading and writing skills, and improve the social and emotional skills that support school success. YCteen offers three prizes for non-fiction essays of no more than 800 words to teens 14-18 that answers the question: How has living among people from diverse cultures enriched your life? The Brooklyn Documentary Prize competition is seeking short Brooklyn-focused documentary films. All documentaries submitted for the Brooklyn Documentary Prize completion have to be filmed in Brooklyn and are required to show Brooklyn exteriors locations for a duration of at least 30 seconds in the submitted documentary. The winner of the Brooklyn Documentary Prize will receive a cash award of $250 and the winning documentary will be presented at the Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival screening. Learning Technology Grant Application

The purpose of this grant is to help transform learning environments through the integrated use of instructional technology in classrooms and school libraries, and to provide sustained professional development to increase the skills of teachers and school librarians in the use of instructional technology in coordination and implementation of the Learning Standards of New York State, and the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards. The goals of this grant are to integrate instructional technology in classrooms and school libraries to help students attain higher levels of performance in the State Learning Standards of NY and NYS Common Core Learning Standards to ensure that all New York State students graduate from high school ready for college and careers. The grant period is three years, from December 1, 2015 to June 30, 2018. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, September 18, 2015.
