Step It Up NYC

Teens stepping on the Apollo stage.

For the last ten years, Step It Up NYC has been bringing about social change through community service and dance. This year was no different, as we challenged NYC step and dance teams to “step it up” for LGBTQ rights in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. What started with nearly 1,000 youth from more than 75 teams came down to the top ten, and on June 15, these teams took to the Apollo stage and used their performance to show that all young people—regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression— deserve to be safe, supported and healthy. Check out this year’s PSA on our YouTube page and visit our Facebook page to view pictures from the final showcase.

DYCD Film Festival

Our festival was the biggest to date, featuring more than 60 short films from New York City’s youngest filmmakers in grades 6 – 12. Commissioner Anne del Castillo from the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment stopped by to offer encouraging words to the filmmakers. Visit our YouTube page to watch some of the winning films.
