DYCD’s Ladders for Leaders is a nationally recognized program that offers high school and college students the opportunity to participate in paid professional summer internships with leading corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies in New York City. The program is an initiative of DYCD and supported by the NYC Center for Youth Employment and the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.

Pro-bono partnerships between the Mayor’s Fund to Advance NYC, Discovery Communications, Young & Rubicam (Y&R), Clear Channel Outdoor, OUTFRONT Media, JCDecaux and iHeart Media lead a call to action for employers. Read the full press release on nyc.gov for more.

Earlier this month, DYCD held the annual COMPASS Recipe Rescue cooking competition for K–12 youth to promote healthy eating, parent engagement, and cooking skills. The young chefs took their favorite family recipes and “rescued” them by preparing healthier versions. DYCD partnered with the Institute of Culinary Education to host the event. Special guest judges this year included, radio station Hot 97 DJs Laura Stylez, JENBKLYN (Jen From BK) and Shani Kulture. View stories from the Daily News and the World Journal on the event. Last month, over 650 youth from 20 DYCD-funded afterschool programs ice skated to music in a day of fun and hot chocolate at LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park. Students in kindergarten through middle school from all five boroughs skated at no cost. Check out photos capturing all the fun moments!

Queens pop-up shop Little Pulp opens it’s doors to creativity for an entire month of collaborative art making. For a limited time, they are transforming a 4,000 sq.ft. storefront, at the Shops at Atlas Park, into a collaborative art & printmaking workshop for kids and their adults. Little Pulp’s weekend sessions are 2-1/2 hours of fun, messy hands-on printmaking working together as a group on a few large-scale collaborative art pieces and everyone (including adults) will be able to work on their own printmaking piece. Attendees are encouraged to bring personal mementos such as photos, clippings from magazines, or sketches they have made in the past to contribute to the collaborative effort. ARTech is a pop-up activity center comprised of STEAM-based experiential workshops, installations, and interactive moments for school age children and their accompanying adults. ARTech is designed to inspire young minds to explore and consider how these principles impact their daily lives and the world in which they live. The program will enable exploration around problem-solving and creativity and seeks to facilitate experiential learning. ARTech is hosted by the Meatpacking Business Improvement District and programmed by Children’s Museum of the Arts and the New York Hall of Science. Activities include a blow-up planetarium, a GIF-making station, a rigamajig-building station, the return of the popular CMA ball pit, and much more. Herstory Day is an intergenerational celebration of women’s history in New York City with a focus on quilting, archiving, and art practices. At this free race in Central Park, boys and girls ages 7 to 18 can shake off the winter blues by running 1.7 miles through Manhattan’s most famous park. Harnessing the Power of Youth Organizing: Impact on Resiliency, Social-Emotional Development, and Academic & Career Success will focus on the benefits of youth organizing and how participation in organizing helps young people develop strong social-emotional competencies and tangible skills that promote academic and career success. The workshop will also explore the important role of youth organizing in today’s political climate and provide resources for funders to learn more about youth organizing. Use your imagination and become the superhero, or perhaps supervillain, you’ve always wanted to be. Would you live a life in a comic book universe or use your powers here in the real world? How would you use your super powers for good, or bad, even if it was just for the day. Submit an online written response to the question: “Which superhero or villain would you want to change places with for a day and why?” in 250 words or less for the opportunity to receive a $2,500 scholarship to use towards education. Apply for the 2017 New York Community Trust Non-profit Excellence Awards to strengthen your organization’s management performance. The Non-profit Excellence Awards provides area non-profits with an opportunity to examine their management practices and receive expert feedback to strengthen their ability to meet their mission. Winners share innovative and replicable practices and compete for $60,000 in prize money as well as scholarships to Columbia Business School’s non-profit management courses.

The Foundation supports the intellectual, moral, and physical welfare of people by establishing and supporting non-profit libraries, educational institutions, hospitals, and clinics. Priority is given to applicants who do not have access to outside funding (including government funding); for projects where the grant will cover the largest amount of cost; and for capital projects including equipment or endowments. The Women’s Venture Fund (WVF) is a non-profit organization that helps women to establish thriving businesses in urban communities with funding and business development programs. Fewer women are approved to borrow money from traditional lenders and most women owned businesses are undercapitalized. WVF’s goal is to address this confidence and skills gap so women understand what it takes to successfully access credit. Currently, WVF is working with clients in the New York City metropolitan area. This scholarship is not a traditional scholarship focused on rewarding academic achievement and financial need. Its specific goal is to reward and encourage innovative and creative problem solving. The scholarship aims to honor students who excel as creative problem-solvers and to help make their higher education goals more accessible. The scholarship offers up to $20,000 (over four years). The scholarship is open to exceptionally innovative and creative high school juniors, seniors and college freshmen who are from Connecticut or the New York City metro area (and plan to attend or are attending college anywhere in the U.S.) or students from any part of the U.S. who plan to attend (or are attending) college in CT or NYC.
