Nearly 5,000 visitors turned out for this year’s Spring into Health Fairs! In conjunction with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), NYC Health + Hospitals, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA), the NYC Department for the Aging, the New York City Department of Education, and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, DYCD expanded the number of locations from six events to 34 this year. DYCD Commissioner Bill Chong and Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) Commissioner David Hansell dropped by the BronxWorks and The New York Foundling SONYC middle school afterschool program at Mott Haven Academy Charter School in the Bronx. The directory is updated through the summer and contains information on seasonal jobs, summer internships, training programs and many other opportunities for young people to gain work experience this summer.

DYCD participates, in grades K-12, showcased their views on peace through performance (poetry, dance, song, rap, or instrumental music) and used real-life issues such as teen gun violence, bullying, intolerance and inclusion as inspiration. Through the festival, students celebrated both their similarities and differences, all while raising awareness about how to accept, acknowledge and spread peace. Don't miss the opening celebration (May 19 and 20) of the new imagiNATIONS Activity Center at the National Museum of the American Indian–New York, a weekend of activities showcasing the ingenuity of the Indigenous cultures of the Americas. Practice balancing techniques needed to master control of a traditional Yup’ik kayak from the Arctic; learn how to weave rope strong enough to create a bridge like one found in the Andes of Peru; discover the counting and numeric skills of the Mayans; and take part in a vast array of activities that embrace Native innovations throughout history! Fourteen miles of sparkling sand and crashing waves can be found in all five boroughs, which is great news for NYC families. Best of all, New York City’s beaches are just a subway, bus or ferry ride away. From the “Bronx Rivera” to iconic Coney Island and the Rockaways, these urban seasides offer just about everything suburban beaches do (except the out-of-town commute!). Lifeguards are on duty daily (10:00am – 6:00pm) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

The 2018 Curtis Scholarship is an annual leadership development program to support youth ages 16-20 from underserved communities in the U.S. or U.K. who embody the values of global citizenship. Curtis Scholars will be invited to join a 10-day learning trip to South Africa, and one advocacy trip to Global Citizen Week Events in NYC. Joined by members of the Global Citizen staff, the Curtis Scholars will explore social issues, innovative international organizations and cultural sites with a focus on poverty alleviation in Global Citizen's issue areas. Their mission is to foster global citizenship through empowering youth from underrepresented groups with the skills and tools to become dynamic change-makers for local to global impact. New York Ramblers are proud to expand the Ramblers family to include student athletes pursuing higher education who are committed to serving the LGBTQI community either as members or demonstrated allies. They hope that this financial support will positively reinforce their pride in the community and assist them as they follow their educational and career ambitions. Awardees receive a one-time scholarship, paid directly to their school, covering tuition and fees. Up to two scholarships of $2,500 are awarded every summer.
