The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), in conjunction with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), NYC Health + Hospitals, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA), NYC Department for the Aging, New York City Department of Education and New York City Department of Parks & Recreation will host 34 Spring into Health Fairs from Tuesday, April 10 through Saturday, April 14, 2018. The Spring into Health Fairs will engage, encourage, empower, and expose community residents to an array of holistic services. As part of DYCD’s goal of fostering civic participation among our City’s young people and families, we are teaming up with the City Council to promote Participatory Budgeting New York City (PBNYC). From April 7 through April 15, New Yorkers in 27 participating City Council districts will be able to directly impact how a portion of the public budget is spent in their communities. The great news is that young people who are at least in the sixth grade or aged 11 and older can be part of this opportunity as well. The NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy is one of several innovative, effective programs that the Department provides for young people in New York City. The program gives young individuals between the ages of 10 and 16 the opportunity to train with police officers during the summer, leading to positive relationships between the Police Department and the city's youth. Participants attend the Youth Police Academy in the borough of their residence, five days a week for six weeks, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Police Officers conduct classes that include lectures, role-plays, and demonstrations in the areas of law, behavioral science, drug prevention and gang resistance. Free Tennis Classes
Youth ages 5-18 receive free tennis instruction from trained coaches in schools and public parks in all 51 New York City council districts year round. Registration for all NYJTL Community Tennis Programs is continuous and players can register at any time. PowerPlay's SuperSTARS
PowerPlay’s SuperSTARS Leadership Academy (SSLA) is a year-long youth development program that offers middle and high school girls the chance to develop body and mind through sports, deepen critical skills in writing and earn a $750 scholarship! Free Golf Lessons
The Brooklyn and Queens Junior Golf Center offers free instruction and use of equipment for all ability levels. The Center features a six-hole par 3 course, putting and chipping greens, a driving range, clubhouse and classroom. The Youth Leadership Institute at Intrepid (YLI@Intrepid) is a yearlong school program beginning September 29, 2018. It’s for rising 10th grade students of New York City to participate in workshops and field trips that elicit youth and social advocacy, promote community development and provide opportunities for individual growth in public speaking, presentation skills, and college and career readiness. Eligible students must fill out an application for consideration. Deadline for student application, all supplemental materials and one teacher recommendation is April 20, 2018.
The Urban Journalism Workshop at New York University is designed to develop the next generation of great journalists. A diverse group of 20 high school juniors and seniors attending schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City or in nearby suburbs of the Tri-State metropolitan region (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut only) will come together to spend 10 days attending an intensive and rewarding journalism “boot-camp” held at the Arthur L. Have you ever wanted to get involved at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)? If so, register to attend the Youth J.I.V.E Brooklyn (Job, Internship, and Volunteering Expo) event at the New York Aquarium on Saturday April 14, 2018. Learn how to volunteer as an Explainer. Explainers are high school students who have been accepted into a competitive internship program and work as volunteer educators in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. Selected teens participate in a 25-hour training program and commit to 100 hours of service, leading hands-on science activities for visiting families on weekends and school breaks. The Science Career Ladder is an innovative education and employment program open to high school and college students. While in the program, students are trained to interact with hands-on exhibits, perform science demonstrations, and help facilitate educational programs and workshops. In the process, participants acquire communication skills, knowledge of science and the scientific process, and gain experience in teaching and communicating science. While working at NYSCI, participants also benefit from career workshops, networking opportunities, exposure to STEM careers, and opportunities for growth.
