First-Ever NYC Digital Games Study Released, Showing $2B in Economic Impact for the Industry
|
The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), whose portfolio was expanded to include digital games in 2018, announced the results of the 2021 NYC Digital Games Industry Economic Impact Study. The groundbreaking study details specifics on the sector's significance and contribution to New York City's economy. Major findings of the report conclude that in 2020 the industry supported 7,600 jobs, $762 million in wages, and $2 billion in economic output. The entire report is available here.
Additionally, MOME announced that it will be licensing the "Made in NY" logo to digital games made in New York City. Established in 2004, the "Made in NY" logo celebrates and supports New York City's growing media and entertainment, technology, and fashion industries and their creators. The logo signifies a mark of distinction for work created in New York City, and advances workforce and industry development. Qualified digital gaming companies can use the "Made in NY" logo in their game's packaging, title screen and/or game website. The Paley Center for Media Celebrated its Grand Reopening & The Annual Holiday Extravaganza, PaleyLand
MOME Commissioner Anne del Castillo joined Paley Center for Media Board Chair Frank A. Bennack, Jr., President and CEO Maureen Reidy, and Fred Dixon, President and CEO of NYC & Company (left to right) for the official reopening of the historic institution on December 2. The event welcomed back visitors for the first time since the pandemic hit last March and the city began virtual programming. The Paley Center is a nonprofit organization focused on the cultural, creative, and social significance of television, radio, and emerging platforms.

The City Proclaimed November 16 as "Chicago Day" in Honor of the Show's 25th Anniversary on Broadway

Chicago celebrated its 25th Anniversary as the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and second longest-running musical ever. MOME Commissioner Anne del Castillo presented a proclamation from the City of New York to the show's entire cast and crew at the Ambassador Theatre, marking November 16 as "Chicago Day."

Dominican Film Festival Celebrated 10th Anniversary, Received Proclamation from the City

On November 9, the Dominican Film Festival kicked off its 10th year, receiving a proclamation from the City of New York and screening the international premier of the romantic comedy No Es Lo Que Parece. MOME Associate Commissioner of Workforce Development and Educational Initiatives, Alia Jones- Harvey, was on hand to recognize the festival for exemplifying the remarkable dynamism of New York City's creative community and amplifying the voices of talented storytellers.

ShiftNYC Series of PSAs, Highlighting the Resiliency of New Yorkers During Pandemic, debuts on NYC Life
ShiftNYC, a new series of public service announcements created by students in the Multimedia Center at Lehman College, in partnership with MOME, explores how New Yorkers adapted, endured, and came together during the pandemic. Each of the five PSAs focuses on one of the five boroughs and highlights a local business or project, including Queens and NYCNext, Brooklyn and the ‘Made in NY' Production Assistant Training Program, The Bronx featuring the New York Videogame Critics Circle and Bronxworks, Manhattan featuring the Costume Industry Coalition (pictured above) and Staten Island featuring DiLeo's Pizzeria and Feeding our Frontlines.
The series can be seen in its entirety on NYC Life (Channel 22 on Cablevision and Chanel 25 on other cable providers).

5th Annual Women + Media Career Virtual Summit Featured Three Days of Inspiration, Motivation and Connection
Presented by the Center for Communication November 17-19, the virtual summit is designed to help students and recent graduates break into the business and be successful in their early careers through skill workshops, masterclasses, keynotes, panels and networking. MOME Associate Commissioner of Workforce Development and Educational Initiatives, Alia Jones-Harvey, gave opening remarks. Panels featured representatives from leading media organizations including Discovery, Disney, Hearst, McKinsey & Company, NBCUniversal, Nielsen, ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia.

MOME Attends Premiere Events, Celebrating "Made in NY" Productions
The film and television industry contributes $82 billion to NYC's economy and employs more than 100,000 New Yorkers. It was one of the first industries to return in the pandemic and MOME was thrilled to celebrate the premiere screenings of "Made in NY" films including Clifford the Big Red Dog, Tick Tick... Boom, and West Side Story.

UPCOMING EVENTS SPONSORED BY MOME
Overdose Prevention and Naloxone Training Webinar, presented by The Office of Nightlife and the NYC Department of Health, will take place on December 16 from 3-4:30pm. The presence of fentanyl in NYC's drug supply has dramatically increased the number of overdose deaths. This Webinar will teach venue owners and workers on what steps they can take to prevent an opioid overdose and save a life. The online presentation will be followed by Q&A and FREE naloxone training. Participants will become Certified Opioid Overdose Responders and can receive an Overdose Rescue Kit with naloxone--a medication that can save someone's life by reversing the effects of an opioid overdose.
Opening Stage Doors: A Convening to Reimagine Workforce Training will take place virtually December 7-9 from 12pm to 6pm each day. Curated by a team of arts leaders from around the country, this first-of-its-kind event will spotlight current programs training young people and adults for careers in arts administration and technical trades. Keynotes and sessions will highlight tools to make short term and long-term shifts, and work to collectively envision a more equitable industry.
The NYWIFT Muse Awards, presented virtually on December 16 at 1pm, is the premiere industry event of the winter season in New York where some 1,200 industry guests gather to celebrate the accomplishments of the award recipients. For 6 years, MOME has partnered with NYWIFT to present our "Made in NY" Award during their annual Muse Awards. This year's "Made in NY" Award will go to the Tony award-winning actress Patina Miller in recognition of her achievements and contributions to theatre, film, and television.
