Commissioner Anne del Castillo joined NYC Deputy Mayor for Economic & Workforce Development Maria Torres-Springer at the iconic sandwich shop Hello Deli, located in NYC’s theatre district, to celebrate its 30th year in business and proclaim January 31 as “ Hello Deli Day.”
The proclamation was awarded to the deli’s co-owners, Rupert Jee, a native New Yorker and son of Chinese immigrants, and his business partner, May Chin. Hello Deli is around the corner from the famed Ed Sullivan Theater, where Jee was featured for decades on The Late Show with David Letterman. Joining in the proclamation’s unveiling was The Late Show with David Letterman musical director Paul Shaffer.
Hello Deli is one of thousands of small businesses that form the backbone of NYC’s economy and reflect the diversity and industrious spirit of small business owners throughout the five boroughs. Hello Deli is a shining example of small businesses that have benefited from and contributed to NYC’s entertainment industry, which generates more than $150B in economic impact annually and nearly 500,000 jobs per year.

NYC Winter Outing Offers Discounts on Broadway Shows, NYC Restaurants, Hotels and Other Attractions |

Commissioner del Castillo joined Mayor Adams, Congresswoman Maloney, and NYC & Company President & CEO Fred Dixon at the Empire State Building to officially kick off NYC Winter Outing, a series of citywide experiences offering substantial discounts at local restaurants, hotels, and the city’s most iconic attractions now through February 13, as well as 2-for-1 sales of Broadway and Off- Broadway theatre tickets until February 27.
MOME is proud to partner with NYC & Company to support NYC Winter Outing, which includes NYC Broadway Week and NYC Off-Broadway Week, NYC Restaurant Week, NYC Must-See Week, and NYC Hotel Week. Among those participating are Broadway shows Aladdin and Chicago, Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem, the Minetta Tavern in the West Village, One World Observatory, the Guggenheim Museum, the New York Botanical Gardens, the Equinox Hotel, the Beekman Hotel, the New York Marriott Marquis, and many others.
Joining in the announcement were Charles Flateman, Executive Vice President at the Shubert Organization; Marlene Poynder, General Manager of the Conrad Hotel Downtown; and Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League.

NYC Recognized as One of the Best Places to Live and Work as a Filmmaker in 2022 |
MovieMaker Magazine details the comeback story of NYC as a filmmaking capital returning to pre-pandemic levels of film and TV production in 2022.
The magazine acknowledges numerous film and TV projects in various stages of production throughout the five boroughs, including hit shows Billions on Showtime, NBC’s New Amsterdam, and the upcoming Netflix film Your Place or Mine, starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher.
MOME’s comprehensive NYC Film and Television Industry Economic Impact Study in 2021 noted that the local film and TV industry reached an all-time high in 2019, with approximately 185,000 jobs, $18.1 billion in wages, and $81.6 billion in total economic output.

“Made in NY” Film & TV Productions Earn Multiple Nominations as Awards Season Kicks Off |

Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards included several “Made in NY” films shot and produced in NYC. West Side Story received seven nominations including Best Picture, with Tick, Tick… Boom! getting two nods. NYC musician Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson received his first Oscar nomination for the “Made in NY” documentary Summer of Soul, with Lin-Manuel Miranda got a Best Original Song nomination for Encanto. Nominees for the 53rd NAACP Image Awards celebrated many “Made in NY” productions. Film nominations included West Side Story, Summer of Soul, and Passing, and TV series Godfather of Harlem, Saturday Night Live, Pose, Power Book II: Ghost, Desus and Mero, The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, The Amber Ruffin Show and Harlem getting recognition. The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations recognized actors in TV series and films produced in NYC. Among the "Made in NY" SAG Awards nominees were Succession, West Side Story, Only Murders in the Building, Halston, Tick, Tick… Boom!, and Passing. The Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 26th annual awards, which included recognition for “Made in NY” productions In the Heights, West Side Story, Succession, Only Murders in the Building, Saturday Night Live and Halston. The Directors Guild of America announced it will honor Brooklyn native Spike Lee with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 74th Annual DGA Awards on March 12. The DGA also announced directorial nominations for "Made in NY" films, including Steven Spielberg for West Side Story, Lin-Manuel Miranda for Tick, Tick… Boom!, Rebecca Hall for Passing, Emma Seligman for Shiva Baby, and Summer of Soul directed by Questlove. DGA Awards nominations also went to “Made in NY” TV series Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Succession. “Made in NY” productions also garnered Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards nominations. Films and TV series being celebrated include Summer of Soul, Tick, Tick… Boom!, In the Heights, West Side Story, Only Murders in the Building, Succession and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. The awards will be handed out on March 13.
The Producers Guild of America will honor legendary NYC actress and Executive Producer of West Side Story Rita Moreno with the Stanley Kramer Award at this year’s PGA Awards on March 19. “Made in NY” productions up for PGA Awards this year included Summer of Soul, West Side Story, Tick, Tick… Boom!, Succession, Only Murders in the Building, Come From Away, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Saturday Night Live, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The Writers Guild of America Awards nominations also celebrated a host of "Made in NY" TV series and films, including Only Murders in the Building, New Amsterdam, Desus and Mero, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Succession, Saturday Night Live, How to with John Wilson, That Damn Michael Che, Halston, and the 2021 The Tony Awards. WGA film nominations went to Tony Kushner for West Side Story and Stephen Levenson for Tick, Tick… Boom! The WGA Award winners will be announced on March 20. Congratulations to the “Made in NY” GLAAD Media Awards nominees, honoring the media representations of the LGBTQ+ community. NYC TV series nominations include Sesame Street, Dickinson, Pose, Harlem, The Amber Ruffin Show, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Halston, and Late Night with Seth Meyers, with feature films nominations for Tick, Tick… Boom!, Port Authority, Shiva Baby, and West Side Story. The 11th Annual New York Game Awards celebrate the best games and game developers of 2021 |
Winners of the 11th New York Game Awards were announced on February 1 with former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé and New York Videogame Critics Circle President Harold Goldberg serving as hosts.
MOME was a proud supporter of the annual event, presented by New York Videogame Critics Circle and celebrating the best games, gamers and developers of 2021. Top awards were given to Tim Schafer, whose Psychonauts 2 was named Big Apple Best Game of the Year, while Schafer also received the first-ever Andrew Yoon Legend Award. Sable and Resident Evil 4 VR each won two awards.
MOME recently published the 2021 NYC Digital Games Industry Economic Impact Study, which found that the broader digital games industry in NYC created $2 billion in economic value, and 7,600 jobs that paid $762 million in wages per year.

MOME Joins USPS in Unveiling Year of the Tiger Stamp in NYC |

Commissioner del Castillo joined the Honorable Ronald A. Stroman from the United States Postal Service Board of Governors for the official unveiling of the new Lunar New Year Stamp honoring the Year of the Tiger on January 20.
The design of the new national stamp was inspired by the elaborately-decorated masks used in dragon and lion dances performed in Lunar New Year parades. Michelle Yun Mapplethorpe of the Asia Society Museum and Ying Yen of the New York Chinese Cultural Center were also present for the ceremony.
The event was an opportunity to highlight the City’s Lunar New Year traditions on a national level, and to bring awareness to the Asian and Asian-American communities’ rich contributions to our national history and culture. The Year of the Tiger begins February 1, 2022 and ends January 21, 2023. The stamps are now on sale at post office locations nationwide and online at usps.com/stamps. |

New York International Children’s Film Festival will kick off its annual event on March 4. Each year, the festival celebrates the beauty and power of film and help children understand and connect with complex, nuanced art. NYICFF also encourages the creation of projects that represent and celebrate unique, diverse, and historically excluded voices. Bare Feet in NYC Season 5 will premiere on NYC Life, the flagship channel of the city’s broadcast network NYC Media, on March 9 at 8:30pm. Each Wednesday in March, Emmy-winning host and professional dancer Mickela Mallozzi will travel to one of NYC’s five boroughs to highlight the diversity of dance and music traditions in NYC neighborhoods - including hip-hop in the Bronx, Korean dancing in Queens, Latinx music on the Lower East Side and Caribbean culture in Brooklyn.
Applications for the 4th Annual Public School Film Festival are open. The annual festival provides students the opportunity to have their work recognized by industry leaders while helping them explore careers in filmmaking.
