JanArtsNYC Returns for 2022

The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), in partnership with APAP|NYC, the largest performing arts marketplace in the world, is proud to announce the virtual return of JanArtsNYC the month-long celebration of live entertainment in NYC featuring new works in theatre, dance, opera, music and performance.

The 9th-annual edition of JanArtsNYC kicks off on January 7th with highlights that include world-renowned dance artists at The Joyce Theater at Chelsea Factory, a multi-week series of panels focusing on the art of contemporary stage directing at The Drama League's Directorfest, online conversations celebrating musical discovery, gender equity, social justice at the NYC Winter Jazzfest, nine global live bands from diverse cultures performing at globalFEST's Tiny Desk meets globalFEST, and many more.

Adding to the shared experience, audiences and professionals will also be invited to join the online "6th Boro," an online place for industry people to gather for social conversations in between performances, panels, and events.

Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment Celebrates 15th Anniversary of "Made in NY" Training Program

The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment celebrated the 15th anniversary of the 'Made in NY' Production Assistant (PA) Training Program. Since its inception in 2006, the PA Training Program has prepared underemployed New Yorkers for entry-level positions in film and television production, and has provided employment opportunities in the entertainment industry with production companies, film studios and TV networks that shoot on location throughout the five boroughs. This anniversary marks a milestone moment for the program as the number of graduates placed in jobs passes 1,000.

Applications Open for the 4th Annual New York City Public School Film Festival

Applications are now open for the 4th Annual New York City Public School Film Festival, celebrating the talent and diversity of student voices throughout the five boroughs. The New York City Public School Film Festival was created as a partnership between The NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and the NYC Department of Education to provide opportunities for students to have their work recognized by industry leaders and explore careers in filmmaking. Films will be selected for the festival by a panel of educators and media professionals, and screened at events on May 20th and 21st, 2022.

DOE middle and high school students can apply now through March 25, 2022 at nyc.gov/nycpsfilmfestival.

2021 'Made in NY' Award Presented to Tony-Award Winning Broadway, TV and Film Actress Patina Miller

The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment presented Tony Award-winning actor Patina Miller the 'Made in NY' Award for her contributions to the entertainment industry in New York City at the 42nd annual MUSE Awards on December 16th.

Miller starred in both the Broadway and West End productions of Sister Act, as well as the 2013 revival of Pippin, which earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. The MUSE Awards, which were presented virtually this year by the New York Women in Film and Television, aims to celebrate the achievements of men and women who work both on-screen and behind the camera in New York City. Previous 'Made in NY' honorees include Awkwafina, Meryl Streep, Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Fey, Spike Lee, John Leguizamo, and Michael K. Williams.

Resiliency documentary, NYC OVERCOMING, premieres on NYC LIFE

Emmy award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson and Harlem-based Firelight Films premiered, NYC Overcoming, a series of five short films on the City's flagship television channel NYC Life on Dec. 17th. The films were presented as a one-hour special and depicted stories of New York City's resiliency during the pandemic.

The documentary special enlisted BIPOC film professionals from across the five boroughs to build the overall production, which aimed to celebrate the efforts of the nightlife, hospitality, and entertainment communities throughout the five boroughs. NYC Life is part of NYC Media, the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment's official broadcast network and media production group of the City of New York.

NYC Office of Nightlife Hosts Drug Prevention Webinar

The Office of Nightlife and the NYC Department of Health presented an Overdose Prevention and Naloxone Training Webinar on December 16th. The presence of fentanyl in NYC's drug supply has dramatically increased the number of overdose deaths, and the webinar helped instruct NYC nightlife venue owners and workers on what steps they can take to prevent an opioid overdose and save a life. Participants were urged to become Certified Opioid Overdose Responders and receive an Overdose Rescue Kit with naloxone - a medication that can save someone's life by reversing the effects of an opioid overdose.

'Opening Stage Doors' Provides Tips & Tools for Securing Off-Stage Performing Arts Careers

Commissioner Anne del Castillo took part in Opening Stage Doors: A Convening to Reimagine Workforce Training on December 9th. This virtual, first-of-its kind 3-day event hosted by the Roundabout Theater and curated by a team of arts leaders from around the country, spotlighted current training programs for young people and adults interested in off-stage performing jobs and careers in arts administration and all technical trades.

Over the course of the 3-days, participants were able to engage directly with industry leaders to learn about hiring practices that actively promote anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion and hear from organizations offering programs that provide training for backstage, technical theater jobs, such as the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment's "Made in NY" PA Training Program.

Speakers included Tony and Obie Award-winning Broadway and Television director, Kenny Leon, Director of Education at Brooklyn Academy of Music, Ava Kinsey and Director of Theater and Musical Theater for the National Endowment for the Arts, Greg Reiner.

"BECOMING BROADWAY" Informs NYC College Grads about Careers in Theatre

The Mayor's Office of Media Entertainment along with Situation Events presented the Zoom Open House event "Becoming Broadway: An Introduction to a Career in the Theatre" on December 6th.

The free virtual event was designed for college students, recent graduates, and aspiring young professionals to obtain industry knowledge and get a peek behind the curtain of Broadway's growing job market. Commissioner Anne del Castillo provided opening remarks, and in the day-long event, she and participants discussed life in the theater with producers, stage managers, technical directors, sound designers, makeup artists, merchandise managers, playwrights, choreographers and talent agents.

Legendary NYC actress Rita Moreno is Honored with a Moving Image Award

Commissioner Anne del Castillo from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment attended the 2021 Moving Image Awards honoring the legendary New York actress Rita Moreno at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens on December 3rd. The Puerto Rico-born Moreno, whose unparalleled career spans more than seven decades, has won all four of the most prestigious awards in show business – an Oscar, a Tony, two Emmys, and a Grammy – and has appeared in more than 40 feature films, most recently the new "Made in NY" Steven Spielberg remake of West Side Story.The event coincided with the celebration of Moreno’s 90th birthday.
