MUSIC HEALS / MUSIC FOR THE SOUL
|
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, MOME and the musician's union AFM Local 802, have launched two programs that provide paid gigs for NYC musicians while supporting COVID-response efforts. "Music Heals," in partnership with NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, features live, in-person one-hour performances to thank the staff and those being treated at vaccine sites. "Music for the Soul," in partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals, features musicians performing virtually and in person for staff and patients at public hospitals. After a successful run last May-July of last year, "Music for the Soul" returns May 26 through June 2022. with livestreamed performances on NYC Health + Hospital's Facebook page weekdays from 12-1pm ET. The free program is also expanding, starting in July, 2021 there will also be 2+ hour live, in-person performances at several hospitals, through December 2021.

3RD ANNUAL NYC PUBLIC SCHOOL FILM FESTIVAL
For the first time ever, the amazing student films selected for this festival are available to the public for free on the NYCPS Film Festival homepage.The New York City Public School Film Festival – which is sponsored by MOME and the Department of Education – provides an opportunity for students to have their work recognized and consider careers in filmmaking. Middle school and high school students may submit films for consideration by an expert panel. This year, 32 films were recognized at a private ceremony and screening for students, teachers, and family, which took place on May 6, 2021.

FUTURE NOW CONFERENCE
MOME is a proud sponsor of the FUTURE NOW conference, which runs May 26 through May 28, 2021. This event is organized by the nonprofit leadership incubator, Future Now, which seeks to build future leaders in the media industry. The conference brings together students from across the country with today's top executives, thought leaders and professionals. The conference is designed to give students the opportunity to hear directly from leaders in the industry, connect, network and receive guidance from them. Recruiters from various companies are also on site to recruit FUTURE NOW students for internship and job opportunities.

NYC MEDIA BROADCASTS CITYWIDE ELECTION DEBATE
NYC Media, which is part of MOME and is the official network and media production group of the City of New York, is broadcasting debates on NYC Gov/Channel 25.2 (Channel 74 on Spectrum and Altice, Channel 24 on FiOS, and Channel 81 on RCN). The full debate schedule is available on the Campaign Finance Board's website. The primary elections for New York City Mayor, Comptroller, Public Advocate, Borough Presidents, Manhattan District Attorney, and some City Council seats will be held on June 22, 2021, and early voting begins on June 12. The deadline to register to vote is May 28. You can find out if you are registered online and you can learn how to register to vote on the NYC Board of Elections website.

"JAGGED LITTLE PILL"-INSPIRED SERIES CONTINUES ON NYC MEDIA
MOME's NYC Media launched a new series "Wake Up: Why Social Responsibility in Theatre Matters" with "Jagged Little Pill" veterans discussing the importance of socially responsible storytelling. The series is inspired by the themes in the award-winning hit Broadway musical "Jagged Little Pill" which is based on Alanis Morissette's GRAMMY-winning 1995 album of the same title, with an original story by Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody. The "Jagged Little Pill" vets are joined by members of a special committee of experts, the Impact Board of Advisors, set up by the musical's creators and its co-producer, Level Forward. You can watch episodes of this series online on the NYC Media website. Or, you can view episodes on our NYC Life channel Wednesdays in May at 11:30pm, with second screenings Tuesdays in May at 12:30am.

DIVERSITY + MEDIA CAREER SUMMIT
Once again, this year, MOME helped support this three-day event, which took place April 14 to 16, 2021. Our partner, The Center for Communication, is a nonprofit dedicated to bringing more diversity to the media industry and giving students access to influential figures who can speak about the business today. The Diversity + Media Career Summit is designed to help students and recent graduates break into the media business and be successful in their early careers.

"MADE IN NY" TALKS SPRING RECAP
All talks are free, virtual, and open to the public. Presented BY MOME in partnership with the Center for Communication, the series brings together industry leaders to share insight, information and news with New Yorkers looking to work in media and entertainment. This spring, MOME presented the following talks: "Marketing, Messaging and the Public Interest," "Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street," "Making TV in NYC," "Marketing, Messaging and the Public Interest," "Podcasting: What's Next?" "International Women's Day: Celebrating Female Leadership," and "Call My Agent: Launch a Creative Career."
