NYC Announces New Diversity Initiative for Film and TV Industry

On June 29th, Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin announced #NominateNYC - a groundbreaking new initiative that seeks to bring greater diversity to the film and entertainment industries. By visiting #NominateNYC’s web portal, NYC based entertainment professionals will be able to nominate themselves or others of varying backgrounds for consideration for membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. To take advantage of the portal, please visit #NominateNYC, and submit your nominations before November 15, 2016.

#NominateNYC has been gaining momentum, with coverage on the front page of The New York Times and in Crain’s New York Business. To keep the momentum going, we ask that you help spread the word via social media, using #NominateNYC.

MOME Announces $1 Million Grant to Support Community and Ethnic Journalists

Commissioner Menin is joined by (L-R) CUNY J-School Dean Sarah Bartlett and J-School Center for Community and Ethnic Media co-directors Karen Pennar and Jehangir Khattar.

On June 27, Commissioner Menin and CUNY Graduate School of Journalism (J-School) Dean Sarah Bartlett announced that MOME will grant $1 million to the J-School to create new programs to help New York City’s community and ethnic media outlets stay competitive in the current media landscape, and bring them further into the digital age. In addition, the J-School’s broadcast facilities will be officially renamed the "Made in NY Broadcast Center" in recognition of MOME’s commitment to this important element of New York’s media sector.

Broadway in the Boros Held in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn

On July 15, MOME presented Broadway in the Boros featuring “Beautiful, the Musical.” Over 200 people came to listen to cast members. Surprise guest, Darren Criss from the television show Glee also sang a tribute to Carole King. The second in the series, the event was co-sponsored by iHeart Radio.

Broadway in the BOros
Broadway in the Boros: Queens

MOME’s “Broadway in the Boros’ initiative continues Friday, July 29 with a lunchtime performance at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens. Members of the current Broadway cast and musicians from "Kinky Boots" will perform musical vignettes in a festive, open-air setting. This event is free and open to the public.



Asian American International Film Festival
AAIFF
The Asian American International Film Festival is the first and longest-running festival in the country devoted to films by and about Asians and Asian Americans. The 39th-annual festival kicks off July 21 and runs through July 30. MOME is proud to support this year’s Free Films in Flushing series and the Made in NY Shorts Program.
