BROADWAY IN THE BOROS RETURNS FOR A THIRD YEAR

bway in the boros

Broadway in the Boros is ready to bring more free musical performances to neighborhoods across the city! MOME was most recently in Queens where more than a thousand people came out to watch current Broadway casts from "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" and "Once On This Island," the 2018 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival.

MOME's First Deputy Commissioner Kai Falkenberg and Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer pumped up the crowd, and Julie James, host of SiriusXM's "On Broadway", emceed.

The series heads to Staten Island next on Friday, July 13 from 12pm-1pm at Lighthouse Point Plaza where casts from TONY Award-winning musical "Wicked" and the 2018 Tony Award winner for Best Musical "The Band's Visit" will perform.

Our last show of the summer will take place at Soundview Park in the Bronx on July 27. All details can be found here.

"ONE BOOK, ONE NEW YORK" PICK, MANHATTAN BEACH. SPAWNS BOOK CLUBS AND EVENTS

one book, one new york

In May, New Yorkers selected Manhattan Beach by Brooklyn resident Jennifer Egan as the 2018 "One Book, One York," and this summer book clubs are springing up across the five boroughs to discuss this literary page turner. Book lovers also had the opportunity to meet the author herself at One Book events including at Strand Bookstore, Vulture Festival, and Books are Magic in Brooklyn.

Manhattan Beach tells the haunting World War II-era story of Anna Kerrigan, who becomes the Brooklyn Navy Yard's first female diver, and her search for her missing father. Scribner, an imprint of Simon and Schuster, has generously donated 1,500 copies of Manhattan Beach to all 219 library branches all over New York City.

Join your community and check out the upcoming One Book, One New York events here.

MOME'S $5 MILLION WOMEN'S FUND

MOME's Women's Fund, a $5 million program to support film and theater projects by, for, or about women, is coming to fruition with the selection of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) to administer it. Designed to combat gender inequity in the entertainment industry, the fund encourages and supports the creation of film, television, digital, theatrical, and other forms of media and entertainment in New York City by awarding cash grants of up to $50,000 for as many as 100 projects. To be eligible, media content must be "Made in NY" with at least 75% of production activity taking place in the five boroughs. The content must be suitable and appropriate to air on a NYC Media outlet.

The project must be produced by, for, or about women, include a meaningful female production or writing credit, or include a female protagonist. Content should inform, educate, and entertain New Yorkers about the City's diverse people and neighborhoods, government, services, attractions, and activities. Finally, the project must be a work in progress; finished or previously-produced projects will not be eligible. Applications will be open later this summer.

NEW YORK MUSIC MONTH CONFERENCE

new york music month

June marked the return of New York Music Month (NYMM), the official celebration of the most diverse music scene in the world, featuring three workshops attended by hundreds of musicians, 13 walking tours attended by dozens of New Yorkers, and a website listing free and ticketed musical events at nymusicmonth.nyc. Some 300 artists signed up for free rehearsal space provided through Spaceworks. This year's NYMM conference, presented in partnership with New Work is Music and NYU Steinhardt Music Business Program, presented speed talks, impromptu performances and informative panels all around the theme of Innovation at the Intersection of Music + Nightlife.

Shira Gans, Senior Executive Director of Policy and Programs at MOME, gave a sneak peek of the upcoming first-ever NYC Nightlife Economic Impact Study, which found that nightlife represents $29.1 billion in economic impact, and supports 250,000 jobs and $10.9 billion in wages. Guest speakers like Just Blaze, Curtis Blow, and Michael Dorf talked about their careers, venues, and challenges they have faced. Ariel Palitz, Senior Executive Director of the Office of Nightlife at MOME, moderated a panel about innovative ways in which neighborhood residents, nightlife operators, and city officials can work together to foster a healthy nighttime economy.
